2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

The US and Switzerland are in a scoreless tie halfway through the second period in the IIHF World championship game. It's being shown on NHL Network.

I’m guessing it would tie last year’s distance record. I don’t think it’s the longest possible though.
Last year's series does hold the record for longest distance between Stanley Cup finalists.

The longest distance between all current NHL franchises is between Florida and Vancouver. Sunrise, FL and Vancouver, BC are 2,781 miles apart or 238 miles further apart than Sunrise and Edmonton, AL.

Dallas has won one period against Edmonton. But it was big one that got them a W.

Devils team reporter Amanda Stein tweeted that UFA to be Tomas Tatar is headed to EV Zug in the Swiss League. He was a 20 goal scorer for the Devils in 2022-23 but only scored 16 goals in his next 2 seasons with Colorado, Seattle and the Devils

Tatar was never fast, but he had slowed down to the point of being nearly stationary by the end of this season. He's still got hands though, so maybe he'll have some fun in the Swiss league.

This one's for you Habsy in my best Habs fans voice..."Tatarrrrrrrrrrrr"...

The Blackhawks filled out Jeff Blashill’s staff, retaining Anders Sorensen and hiring Michael Peca as assistants. Sorensen was promoted from AHL Rockford in December when he was named interim coach. The Blackhawks went 17-30-9 under him. He was promoted to head coach in Rockford in 2021-22 and coached them for 2 more full seasons before being promoted to Chicago. Peca had spent the last 2 seasons as an assistant for the Rangers. Prior to that, he was an assistant for AHL Rochester for 2 seasons and a player development coach for the Caps in 2020-21.

I used to love when Mike Peca was still playing. Inevitably, there would be at least one “There’s a small Peca in the house tonight.” It always appealed to my sophomoric humor.

Cam Robinson from Elite Prospects tweeted that he’s hearing the Bruins are hiring Marco Sturm as their next coach. His last year in the NHL was 2011-12, he played a year in Germany after that. He coached the German National,Team from 2015-18, leading them to a Silver Medal at the 2018 Olympics. He was an assistant for the Kings for 4 years and just finished his 3rd season as head coach of AHL Ontario.

The Panthers will host the Rangers in the Winter Classic on January 2, 2026. The game will be played at loanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins. It will be the Panthers first appearance in an outdoor game, the Rangers 6th. It will tie them with the Penguins and Flyers for 2nd most outdoor appearances behind the Blackhawks. The Bruins will also make their 6th appearance when they visit Tampa for the Stadium Series game in February.

The Rangers have always been the visiting team in their outdoor games. They receive a property tax exemption from New York City that mandates all of their home games be played at Madison Square Garden. That included the 2 games at Yankee Stadium against the Devils and Islanders and 1 game at Citi Field, where the Slugs were the home team.

Presumably Peca is there for the young forwards, specifically Bedard. Blashill had trouble connecting with the Wings' young guys, reportedly. Nice to see them keep Sorensen around. It's not like he did bad work there as the interim.

I have no idea how it will translate to the NHL, but Sturm did a great job with the German national team. His was one of the best drilled national sides I've ever seen ... that wasn't Finnish, at least.
