Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

always amazing how all these guys who would never ever ever waive a NTC are so willing to leave when their contract is up.

As much as I loathe Marner, it is perfectly understandable he didn’t want to waive his NMC mere months before he’s scheduled to hit free agency and right before his wife was about to give birth to go to a team that isn’t a serious contender, almost certainly had no interest in paying him what he wants and that he likewise has no interest in playing for.

Though I’m sure the fact that this decision screwed the Leaf organization over was a delightful bonus for him.

Though that’s the problem with caving to these guys when they’re RFA’s and handing out NMC’s and NTC’s like they’re candy on Halloween.

No doubt the Leafs, as they descend back down to the bottom of the league in the next few seasons, will have many regrets about how this era of the franchise coddled talented nonperforming players and did not put the proverbial crest on the front ahead of the names on the back. There's a reason for this saying and this era of the Leafs illustrates its truth perfectly.

There could easily have been potential Carter/Alomar or Kawhi type trades out there the Leafs might have changed the fate of this core with in past years

if they had smarter and bolder management, that is.

what they have had is scared and reactive management, who have been patient to a fault when they should have shown urgency and jumped the gun when they should have been patient.

Teams have to get ahead of the curve and make tough decisions before trade clauses kick in

Leafs needed to start thinking off making changes after the Habs playoff debacle

only took the great habs rebuild 4 years to make the playoffs again after that.

wonder when the next time they make it is.

Yep. If management had any balls or desire to win they'd have ripped the roster to shreds after blowing a 3-1 series lead to the 18th place Habs. If they'd done that then they wouldn't be staring into the abyss today.

You can only kick the can down the road for so long. Eventually the reckoning comes. It's always going to be hard, but it's harder when management is also stupid.

they should switch up the NMC's and instead of being able to choose destination or block trades, instead they just get some compensation ($). I'd also be down to have no NMC's so that there is more talent moving around.
