If you can get a decent price ($7 mill ish) a long term deal makes a ton of sense.

But if it’s bridge at $4-5 or long term at $8+ there is a lot to like about having Knies plus another good forward for the same price as Knies for the next few years

He gets a lot of goals banging and tipping two feet from the goal, and breakaways. Shooting percentage may not be as much an issue with him.
 
He will be well worth $8m, maybe already is with all he brings to the table, but it does seem excessive for him today. Still, if that’s the only number he’d take to give max term, I’d do it.

If you manage the cap like it's going to stay the same, you'll never have good players on your roster. For example, if you think the Habs are going to win anything with a few guys making 7.8 as your highest paid players...maybe if Hughes can find a time machine and go back to 2015.

Fuck, what do you think is going to happen when your 150 pound wonder hits RFA next year if he lights it up again next year? You think he's not going to be asking for 10-11 million?
 
I didn’t realize that Sam Bennett was the leading goal scorer for the playoffs.
We don’t have a playoff goal scoring stud on our team. We dont have a gritty win at all cost thug on our team. The panthers have both in one player. Sam fucking Bennett.

Sure. But everyone likes money, and he is a localish kid who grew up a Leaf fan (wore 93 in calgary for...you know who).

Florida probably looks to replace him for less term and AAV.

Think about the countless times there a top UFA over the last decades that people said this about. From the GTA, come back to help us win - and then they don’t come. JT was that guy that went against that trend.

I doubt very top UFAs are coming here unless through draft or trade.

eh? like who? Who did we actually go after but not get over say the last 10 years?

Also....is a 50 point centre really a "top UFA"?
 
Top or not, he is the perfect fit for us and would give us the best center depth we’ve ever had, plus that winner and beasting element he would add for the playoffs.

Only questions are whether he actually wants to come and how much he’d demand.
