OT: Movies/TV Shows

Fair.

Funny thing, with Nathan For You I never considered any of the business owners to be victims at all. Perhaps in the sense that they may not have been in on the joke... but as far as I can recall he never made them the joke. Much like in The Rehearsal.
Yeah tbh the rehearsal could easily just be one very long Nathan for you episode. That's totally something he'd do in an episode, especially in the later seasons when his schemes would get more convoluted.

Don't really think the business owners were victims either, the joke was always in the situations that he put everyone (including himself) in and how convoluted his ridiculous schemes were, often (like with the rehearsal) with a deeper societal meaning.

Nothing harder in comedy than being unique and original. It's much harder than simply being funny.

I found NFY funny as shit, but yeah I can see how it's not for everyone. Some moments just leave you shell shocked more than actually laugh, which for me is good too. I watch stuff to feel things.
100% on all accounts. Fielder is the funniest unfunny comedian I can think of. No punchlines, no slapstick, nothing but bizarre situations and awkwardness.

I was trying to explain The Rehearsal to a coworker today. He's never heard of Nathan Fielder. I tried to explain the show for like 2 minutes and he looked at me like I had two heads. Then I tried explaining NF's style and he looked at me like I have 3 heads. I'm like "you just have to check it out and see what I mean."

I just tell people “imagine you had to have a very difficult convo with someone… Nathan lets you rehearse it to the max. providing you with actors and sets. No expense spared!”

Trump?

Solid and concise description. Not likely to sell someone on it though.

Yeah, I posted about this last year when I discovered it. Absolutely gut busting... a little more "mean spirited" than anything Nathan Fielder does mind you.
True, but I didn't find myself feeling too bad for the guy because he is so insanely oblivious and has a massive ego somehow.

If it was done to some humble naive low-confidence person, then it would've been more mean than funny.

Except for the "funniest" part, this is a great way to describe him. So it all boils down to whether someone finds just weird, random awkwardness to be funny.

For instance, Larry David's whole schtick is awkwardness, but it's always based in some legitimate sort of context or premise. NF's stuff is always just so contrived that it stretches too far to be funny. Admittedly, I've only seen some of his stuff, but it never drew me in to seek more.

I believe he suffered a head injury and that's why he's like that.

Still hilarious though.

There's actually a whole rabbit hole of stuff on YouTube. A bunch of deleted scenes and interviews. You should check them out.

Honestly, I just say it’s unlike any tv you’ve seen before… love it or hate it, you will think “wtf did I just watch and wtf is coming next?”

Tldr: trying to explain Nathan always goes horribly wrong. It sounds shit because his entire existence is the joke. But you won't get the joke until you watch his television programs. He has worked for Sasha Baron Cohen in the past and you can see some of his influence there, but there is simply nothing to compare it to.
