2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

An advantage is an advantage even if you don’t take advantage of it.

There are other advantages out there of course. One example is the Leafs generate the most revenue in the league so they should be able to afford the best front office and coaching, and also offer the players the most attractive and valued perks (training facilities/staff, travel, family care, nutrition, etc etc)

Not sure the Leafs are doing that.

But that doesn’t negate the Florida tax advantage

you guys are just looking for fucking excuses for our sad ass hockey team, frankly.
I mean I try to take every opportunity to blast the fuck out of the Leafs so it's not that really for me. I'm not really thinking about this one from the Leafs perspective. Some teams have this advantage and I'd say the same if the Leafs were included because I understand third grade math.

Have I honestly struck you over the past several years as a fan of this team’s management, or someone who’d be looking to make excuses for their failures?

I’m under no illusions—even if the tax advantage didn’t exist, or if it actually existed in our favour, our past and present management would still be too fucking stupid to take advantage of it.

But that doesn’t mean that the advantage doesn’t exist, or that it should exist in a system allegedly designed to provide a level playing field for every team.

it doesn't need to be negated, simply viewed in the correct context.

the bolded is the most important of all. it is what the Leafs usually don't have. I am 100% certain they're not doing that because the scouting and talent assessment records speak for themselves.

the second part they've been doing for some time now under Shanahan and yes, that did make a difference off the ice.

ok then why isn't Bettman doing anything about it

Let's be jealous of Florida's current org for the right reasons, is what I'm saying

There's nothing to debate really. Some teams can sign players at 10% discounts. There's nothing arguable about this advantage, it's beautifully quantifiable.

this seems like a silly debate. two things can be true at once:
- Leafs are and have been managed by incompetent ninnies for years; and
- operating in a no state tax jurisdiction gives you an advantage over places that do have state/provincial taxes...

now, I still think the extent of the advantage is being overstated, since athletes are taxed based on each individual game they play (i.e. when they play in Canada, they have to follow Canadian tax rules).

and toronto has other advantages over florida, like endorsement opportunities.

but yah, no state tax is an advantage.

It’s like if signing with the Leafs got every player a guaranteed extra 10% on their salary in endorsement deals per year. Guaranteed from Matthews down to Myers. Doesn’t that give us an edge to get any player? It’s basically the flip side of the same coin.

The Fla guys are signing at discounts to the discounts thought.

The tax benefit for tkachuk vs willy is something in the neighbourhood if 1m, which means tkachuk is still at ~$1m normalized less than Willy - and he’s better.

Reinhart at 8.6 after a 60 goal year is another one.

I guess the point is it’s andvantwge but teams like the leafs have doubled down on the disadvantage by heing shit negotiators.

I hadn't thought about this from a Leafs perspective tbh. We are all aware that they've been run by dumb fucks. I'm not sure what that has to do with the tax advantage that some teams have though.
