2025 Free Agent Frenzy

Brown is a good pickup for NJD. Good transition player, works both sides of the puck, big engine. Fits their need for middle six quality.

I mean, there's definitely a deal in the works. That's no rumor when it's being this widely reported. And the Rangers definitely can't take payroll in return, so it's going to involve picks. The holdup seems to be whether or not Carolina can get him extended.

My only hope is that the Canes do not part with Nadeau as part of the transaction, a first rounder and a Russian prospect sounds fair.

Meh. That's probably an overpay, honestly. If they get him on a long term deal at a reasonable AAV though, you're OK with a bit of an overpay. I can't imagine the Rangers wanting a small prospect though. That's not their template at all.

Take that agent out for dinner, then breakfast the next day and then send his wife some really nice flowers…wow just wow on the AAV…
The Ducks over-paid to get the term down to 3 years. Honestly, not terrible work on that front. They need a guy like Granlund so badly too.

I would say there are 2 answers to this question.

I expect someone is going to offer Ehlers 7x$9.25 AAV.

But that doesn't mean though he will sign for that. If he prioritizes 'winning' I'm expecting he will take an AAV if $8.25 for 6 or 7 seasons.

The first answer is probably Columbus/Anaheim/San Jose/Utah types.

The second answer is probably Carolina/Winnipeg/Dallas types.

Dallas doesn’t have room for him, they’re already $2 million over. The Jets are one of a few teams with more cap space than the Canes so they could do it.

Yeah, I'm expecting 7 years at $8 million, give or take a year and a million. And best as I can tell from the chatter it's going to come down to Washington and Carolina. He's already hinted that he's not going back to Winnipeg although his agent has said all the right things about the door being open and all those niceties. Carolina can afford to over-pay more than Washington can and can do so without any fancy dancing with regard to the current roster. There has to be a line though, and I'd expect the real decision is how far over it the Canes are willing to go. Because if Ehlers doesn't push to max this out, then he's an idiot. And nothing about this process suggests that he's an idiot.

Reporters are also throwing all sorts of other teams in "the mix" and you never know how willing somebody is to make a deal once they get fixated on it, but Washington and Carolina make the most sense. Toronto needs a creative winger, but they'd basically have to give away a veteran player to make it happen. Dallas is worse, they'd have to pretty much give away a core player to make it happen. Colorado has been mentioned but that $7 million they gave Brock Nelson indicates that they aren't really serious about Ehlers. They've got to worry about improving the D, for one thing.

Also, Ehlers is another one of those deals where Tulsky is going to take heat either way. Miss out and you're too cautious. Land the guy on the contract it's going to take to finish the deal and he's spending too much on an admittedly imperfect player. I'd rather go down swinging while the core group is still young/good enough to compete, but that's me.

This!!! I've seen a ton of "Let Tulsky Cook" memes, but just like any good chef...some people love the dish he's cooking and some will hate it and bitch about it and try and send it back...

As long as we don’t sign Cilantro or pair Mint with Chocolate I’m good with the dish. Wait, what were we talking about?
