Canes Trade for K’Andre Miller

This is going to be one of those 'trust the process' type of trades as there will be plenty of handwringing about the assets we traded and the contract we gave out while all Rangers fans will insist that Miller just completely sucks.

Yes, that is a lot to trade for K'Andre Miller. And yes, that is a big contract for K'Andre Miller. Certainly Tulsky and our analytics team and coaching staff think that K'Andre Miller is going to be very effective playing in our system.

I don't know what Scott Morrow is going to become, but he looked really really green in the playoffs and he certainly isn't going to be end up quarterbacking the Rangers PP1 anytime soon with Adam Fox entrenched there. They have 2 other righties already with William Borgen and Braden Schneider, so unless Morrow has some sort of breakthrough, he is likely going to end up in Hartford unless the Rangers flip him for something else.

I like the trade and that contract is going to be the going rate for younger #2-3 Dmen going forward.
 
We were going to have to overpay to get anyone of quality here whether via free agency or a trade. This is an over payment, yes, but not by much, especially if Morrow can never get a solid game going at this level. I was really high on him until this year's playoffs. He looked very much underwater and very small. I'm good with this trade.
 
We still have over $19 million in cap space available even after the Miller signing. Even if we go $8.5 million for Ehlers, we still have plenty of room to work with.

He wasn't good for them this past year but given how the team was playing not many were.. and I mostly liked what I saw from him the year before..
 
Nope, Miller is worse. Let me see if I can remember how Rangers fans break down Miller's game:

Out of position frequently
Turnover machine
Big but almost never physical (which is strange, I guess he was only physical against the Canes)
No hockey sense
Error prone
Useless waste of space

Nevermind that the entirety of the D corp surrounding Miller was a complete dumpster fire and that most of the Rangers forwards put forth minimal efforts to actually help out their D. It was really all K'Andre Miller's fault.

I suspect Miller will look pretty darn good paired with Chatfield or Slavin or Nikishin or even Sean Walker.

A first round pick and a guy that will be Chicsgo’s #1 goalie. Chicago also retained 26.32% of the contract. The contract was a massive overpay when Chicago signed him and he’ll be 36 at the end of it.

What trade or UFA signing did you have up your sleeve to make the defense better?

None, is this better? Pay this guy more than Slavin. Lesson learned. If you don't take the money, they will give it to someone worse.

Pesce was last summer. You’re seriously advocating for maintaining the status quo on D? Keeping Orlov? He’ll be 34 in 3 weeks. He was also coming off a contract that paid him $250k more than Miller. Keeping Burns? Seriously? Who, this summer, was going to make the defense better? And yes, paying him more than Slavin. If you don’t understand that Slavin gave the team a multi-million dollar hometown discount, I don’t know what to tell you. Would you rather have had Provorov for $1 million more than Miller? Gavrikov for $7 million?

Do you know who else hasn’t scored 10 goals in a season? Pesce.
