2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Marner said he told the Leafs he was done 2 years ago. Thats when he still didn't have a NMC, and it was clear the core 4 needed to be blown up for a few years.

Its all on Shanny.
He said things turned two years ago, but that they told the Leafs they could “go the distance” last offseason. They wouldn’t be talking extension before then anyway.

But they still could’ve traded him last offseason, couldn’t they? If so, and he refused to negotiate, I don’t understand why they didn’t just deal him for the best they could get. The only reason to keep him around was to squeeze one more year out of him, and maybe hope he’d sign, but they should’ve put the contract in front of him and told him to sign otherwise they would trade him for the best offer out there.

If memory serves, his NMC went into effect a week or two after Dubas got fired.

They tried to trade him for Theodore, which would have worked for all parties because he wanted to extend there thanks to the wise advice of Ryan Reaves.

Then things hadn’t soured yet by then for them to really do anything about it. When Marner says two years ago, I think he’s talking about two seasons ago, and then nothing really happened until that Boston loss, so my guess is he’s referring to losing in the playoffs, being the guy who let Pasta go to the net, and getting criticized after. It may really only be like 13 months ago that things went south for him.

2 yrs ago was when the NMC kicked in, no?

His NMC kicked in on July 1, 2023.

So the Leafs window to trade him was from when their season ended on May 12, through to July 1st.

Brad Treliving was hired on May 31st, so he essentially had a full month where he could’ve traded Marner with zero restrictions.

Yeah but when that didn’t happen, they should’ve gone to the next guy. Like weren’t the Avs looking to deal Rantanen by then? Or whatever, name any other package of similar aged players or a couple of promising younger players. Just something.

Sure blame shanny, but it's still an epic cunt move to know you're leaving for a year or two and then do everything to prevent the team that you sucked dry for every penny from recouping any value from you.

Yeah, this is some nasty work by Mitch. There's blame to go around, but fuck him. The rest of the mistakes were predicated on believing in him as a player and a person.

Maybe they did. Not everything is leaked. I don't know, not many teams had the cap space to take him on. It just sounds like Tre has been trying to trade him for awhile. And Vegas was one of a small handful of teams that he would have agreed to an extension with.

When his NMC kicked in, we couldn't move him without Mitch waiving it, and he didn't want to waive it.

Yeah, but things hadn’t gotten bad yet and the assumption was they would just extend him. Doesn’t look like management can be blamed when he turned on the team after that point.

And I honestly wouldn’t put it past Mitch to be enough of a cunt to have waited until after his NMC kicked in before he informed the Leafs of his intention to play out his contract & go to UFA.

If that’s the case, it makes the managerial incompetence by Treliving (and Shanahan) slightly less egregious. But it was still obvious at that point that it was time to move on.

I think their statements make it clear that he had this problem with the team after the NMC kicked in.

Yep. An Shanny told the Core 4 they all were staying before he even hired Tre.
