2025 Free Agent Frenzy

Very smart signing by the Avs. Take a guy that looked like he was skating in wet cement in a location that was close to sea level and sign him to a 7 figure contract a mile up from sea level. Galaxy brain thinking.
He should have plenty of time to acclimate. Shouldn’t be a problem.

Burns still passes the puck extremely well. He can still contribute if used properly. Having said that, I'm glad to move on from him. I still want to see us get a right hander but who would that person replace? Gostisbehere?

They are going to have to shelter the heck out of Burns, but I assume they realize that already. What I'm interested in seeing is if Colorado (and Burns) remain completely committed to his consecutive game streak (they shouldn't be, but probably are).

Elevation won't be a problem for Burns in Colorado. He's as well conditioned as any human his age could be and he'll have ample time to acclimatize. Colorado is used to used to limping along an old defenseman in their mix, as they managed 44 games from Cal de Haan and how many ever Eric Johnson played after the deadline. I'm not sure it's a great style fit, but they'll figure it out and I'm sure Burns will be fine so long as he doesn't get over-used. I would have been thrilled to have him back in Raleigh if you could have gotten a promise from Brind'Amour to forget about the iron man streak, rest him when he needs it and shelter him on the 3rd pair. That wasn't happening, so management saved Brindy from himself ... again. And they're going to have to do that again with Jordan Staal one day fairly soon.

So it seems like Marner checked out early. And 4 Nations was before the trade deadline, there is NO WAY he was going to waive his NTC and move his family twice in 3 months.

Yeah. I'm still not going to criticize a guy for exercising his no movement clause, no matter how much ugly sidespin gets put on it. If teams don't like it when players do that, then feel free to stop handing them out like Halloween candy. That's something you negotiate and presumably the player has given up something in order to get that benefit ... typically cash or term. Whining when a guy cashes in a negotiated contract benefit is like a manager whining when an employee uses personal time off. Knock it off.

That said, openinly pining for another market a couple of months before your season is over is pretty freaking sleezy. Maybe don't do that either.

If Burns is still putting in 20 minutes a game, I don't care how great of condition he's in, he will still be struggling in Denver. At 40 years old, the altitude will take its toll as the season progresses.

Yeah, you'd assume that the Avs will use him like they did their older 3rd pairing guys last season ... 14-16 minutes. Burns can still do that with the right support.

Burns and his beard head to the Rockies. I'm very happy for Burns, and while they'll miss him on the ice and in the locker room, I'm happy the Canes have moved on. Remember how painful it was to watch Roddy in his final year of play? Burns is a class guy and will be just fine in Denver.

Seeing a lot of disappointed fans wishing Burns would have stayed, retired and joined the coaching staff. Dudes headed to Texas sooner than later, where his ranch is. The 1m isn't bad, but I don't trust Brindy to not run him out there on the top pair for 23 minutes a night. Apparently, neither does management.

Yep, this. It would've been nice to have Burns back at that salary and only 10-15 minutes a night until the playoffs, but there was no way hell Brindy wasn't going to run him into the ground again.

The Sharks also claimed Nick Leddy off waivers from the Blues. It was past the buyout deadline, so it was normal waivers.

Orlov is the highest paid on the Sharks. Looking at their roster, they may not win 10 games this year.
If the Sharks are smart, they'll keep playing the kids and go where that takes them. If it's the tank, then so be it. At some point they could probably use another veteran forward, and I'm sure there will be ample opportunities to take a bad contract off someone's hands. They've got two firsts and two seconds in what looks like an awesome draft class in 2026 and an already good young group. They 100% should be thinking 2-3 years down the road.
