Hurricanes 2024-25 Post Mortem and Off Season Stuff

Who on the Canes roster would you be ok with trading for a center? If a trade partner was on the phone with a center who is a decent upgrade over CokeCan.

Kk
Break up the Stanky Janky and maybe trade janky? Even though I like me some janky. I don’t know, I just know we need an upgrade at 2C. I really like this lineup. Id freaking love it with an upgrade

Blake, Ghost, Walker, Kochetkov and Kotkaniemi are the obviuos but depending on what you're trading for bigger pieces might get in play.

I would trade Blake only if a greater return (not a gamble, but a sure thing) was going to happen, like a can't miss 2C. I see such a high ceiling for Blake with the way he plays. He reminds me so much of our Jarvy from his rookie season. The kid ends up on his butt on the ice a lot, but that never slows him down and he just works so hard in both ends of the ice. You can tell that he is 100% prepared to run through any wall for his coach.

the return would have to be right for Blake but we gotta get bigger and we need a better C. Who do you trade from the top 12 forwards that would get you a better C than KK?

I agree 100%. But they also need to get bigger. So Aho, Jarvis, Stankoven, Blake all in your top 6 doesn’t allow for that.

maybe we don’t need to get bigger. I’d hate to lose any of those guys.

Slightly off topic, but what's the deal with Janky? I thought he looked really good when we acquired him, but he was relegated to a healthy scratch for the playoffs. He has size and he scored goals.

That is the question. Maybe someone has a really good up and coming kid at center, and needs cap space or roster room? Do you offer CokeCan and eat half his salary plus a prospect and some draft picks? What if someone like Fantili or Beniers was available ?

I mean, he CAN score some goals but the whole body of work of his 8 years in the NHL is telling. He peaked in third line usage in Calgary early in his career, and managed 17 and 18 goal seasons, but generally tends to have more goals than assists which indicates that there's little depth to his game in the offensive zone. He can sometimes finish off chances created by others but he's not a play driver and not a natural creator either. He's a good fit here because Brind'Amour likes to have a 4th line that can play a little offense. But there's no reason to build him up into something he's not.

Poor Jesperi. He seems like such a good guy and really likes it here. Hell, he even threw some pretty dark shade on his countryman after that dude pouted his way to Dallas. He did that for *us*, the faithful Caniacs. Not sure he really deserves the disparaging nicknames being thrown his way.

BTW guys, the issue with finding a second line center is pretty simple ... not many teams have one that's any good and those that do are hanging on to them for dear life. In retrospect Carolina really screwed up when they let Trocheck walk. That would cost them some Cap flexibility and might have made some other moves more tricky but their failure to draft and develop centers has made that more of a bad choice than it looked at the time. Speaking of failing to develop centers, they also badly miscalculated and should have bet on Luostarinan's development instead of letting Florida get him as a throw-in in that trade. Trading Nic Roy was a mistake as well. In retrospect he ans Louie are the best centers they drafted in the post Rutherford era. I know we all kind of focus on the failed gamble on Kotkaniemi, but there were plenty of other mistakes along that road that made that miss worse. It all boils down to Trocheck though. They lost Roy to get Huala, lost Huala and Louie to get Tro and then let him walk for nothing. That's 3 quality NHL centers (and whatever Huala is) that you let go to end up with freaking Kotkaniemi.

Oh, and to show that they haven't learned this lesson, Tulsky casually tossed Drury out the door as a make-weight in the Rantanen deal. Another limited but useful NHL center gone like so much chaff.

There is a reason I take the time to type out his actual name most of the time. It ain't his fault.

I really like Trocheck and hated, hated, hated seeing him go to another team. I knew we were going to miss not only his talents as a center, but his grit.

Yup, and at $5.6-something million the guy is an absolute bargain and probably has at least two more years before he starts to be an iffy bet. That was dumb, dumb, dumb. Chasing improvement at a position of scarcity when what you have in hand is perfectly suitable to requirements
