Canes sign Ehlers

I don't know much about Ehlers. Can we compare him to a player like Teuvo Teravainen, a play maker, or scoring wing?
I think he’s more creative than Teravainen is with a puck, yet not as defensively minded. I’m interested in seeing how he responds to this system and under RBA.

It's nice to see we didn't have to over pay. Just need a 2nd center and consistent goal tending late in the playoffs to have a great cup chance.

Woke up from surgery to this great news. I like this deal. The contract is exactly what I expected given professional sports these days. I’m completely fine with it and think he will do well in Rods system. Interested to see what they do next! GMET has done well since taking over and I have confidence in him moving forward.

Hope your surgery went well

I hope the surgery went well, too.

So Ehlers’ contract is essentially buyout proof.

Yr 1 1M Base & 9M SB
Yr 2 1M & 9M SB
Yr 3 1M & 7.5M SB
Yr 4 1M & 6.75M SB
Yr 5 1M & 6.5M SB
Yr 6 1M & 6.25M SB

Year 1/2 NMC, Yr 3/4 No Trade, Yr 5/6 10 Team No Trade List

OK, there's the kicker. I was hoping they got a bit of a buyout window on those last two years, but it appears not. With UFAs this stuff is obviously the result of the negotiations, and good on Ehlers' representation for taking care of their client. Still, that one looks to be problematic at some point. Better go win something in the meantime, I reckon.

Oh, and I saw LOT of people (including a few in the hockey media) trying to make the argument yesterday that the "fact" that the contract was flat salary was indicative that the Canes weren't having to bid or negotiate with the player. Which is patently absurd given the number of reports of multiple teams "in the picture" with Ehlers. In truth it was just early in the process and the contract details tend to come out a day or two after the public announcement. There are an awful lot of bad actors in the public space these days willing to twist the truth to tear down a team or a player. Just a reminder.

Ehlers said himself he had to decided amongst multiple offers. People hear what they want to hear.
