New Canadian Politics Thread

So..:he shouldn’t be allowed to sing songs in a church that invited him? Are you going to delete all their playlists too?

Has he called for violence against groups based on race/religion? Protested their businesses? Sung his songs outside mosques and synagogues?

Cause Montreal had let all that stuff go, so to come down on some religious nut singing songs about Jesus inside of a church is hard to reconcile with that.
He referred to the George Floyd murder as "The Miracle in Minneapolis".

He's a piece of shit and he needs to be in prison.

TL;DR of this weak-ass article:

Sure, “hate speech” can be banned from public venues, but this guy’s hateful views don’t ackshually count as hate speech, for …um, reasons. So therefore we shouldn’t be allowed to ban him from public venues!

Also—the correct way to deal with fascists is forever and always to plug both ears, bury your head in the sand, don’t react to, oppose or acknowledge them in any way and wait for them to simply go away! Silly Canadians, why didn’t you just do that here?!

Basically, the Americans did everything right in dealing with the rise of fascism, why aren't we just reading from their playbook?

The same type of idiots in the US media are a big reason why they got slow walked and bothsides'd into a white nationalist government in the process of trying to stay forever.

There is a distinction between hate speech (illegal) and offensive speech (legal). Government shouldn’t be in the business of banning or regulating offensive speech.

And beyond being generally MAGAy I still don’t actually know what this singer says that is so hateful or offensive

Where does organizing boycotts of corporate sponsors for supporting pride month events fall on that shitty spectrum?

He's pretty widely known as the worst kind of religious grifter as well, so fuck everything about giving the benefit of the doubt here. I'm deeply tired of the tolerance trap these religious fuckfaces use as their go to move as they attempt to remove our ability to resist their rule of society.

It’s about is he breaking Canadian law or not.

That's a bit of a narrow view of it. We're not talking about whether or not he can come here and do his music (he performed at a church in Etobicoke the other day), it's whether he should be granted permits to perform on public property and more than just the strict legality of what he says goes into the approval of those permits and that's necessary imo.

He's a Christofascist who believes that only Christians should be allowed to write and enact laws. He also spews anti gay and anti Trans hate. Religion is just a cover for the fascism.

For anyone still on the fence about this choade, Count posted on social media that anyone who values freedom should be appalled that his concerts were canceled.

So deporting him is definitely the way to go.

And you suggest applying your feelings to determine this. I suggest applying the law

Hate speech laws are part of the law but you're missing the point. Municipalities have a bag of things to consider outside of pure legality when determining whether or not they are willing to grant a public event permit. If they deem that there's a significant enough risk to public safety due to potential protests/counter protests getting out of hand, etc they can deny the permit on public safety grounds.

Its not a strict test of the legality of what he says (which they're not equipped to rule on), other factors within their scope are what's considered. This is basic separation of powers shit. A city clerk isn't making the call on matters of constitutional speech
