OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

So a quick look at this guy and the big difference between this year (pretty real gud) and every other year (woof) is that he has, at least for now, figured out how to not get taken yard at a massive rate. K/BB stuff is pretty good, but he's not really a swing and miss guy at a high level.

If his HR rates go back to anything resembling what they were before this season...well, congrats, we have "years of control" on a AAAA reliever. If he's actually figured out how to limit FB's, maybe he's 7th-8th inning guy.

Rojas and Roden, damn. That seems like a lot. Varland is a former Twins prospect who was highly touted once upon a time and is (finally) having a nice year at age 27. He can be that swingman out of the pen who can start if needed. France had a good first half but is a mediocre 1B overall. There's your righthanded bench bat, basically.

Even though Varland does have some intrigue, can't say I like this trade at all, though.

Roden is a JAG and Loper has overtaken him. I am surprised they got rid of Wagner, but I guess with Gimenez and Varso coming back soon, something had to give.

Rojas looks like he could be really good.

Shatkings doing typical conservative stuff, but falling prey to seeming last minute overpay that they tried hard to avoid.

Yeah Wagner is a nice player but still a whatever utility guy in the end. Not a big loss. Even Roden has been pretty disappointing so far this year.

Yeah, it's hard to see what they gave up in this last deal and not think you could have gotten Helsley or Doval or someone like that with a bit more star power back. Especially bullpen arms, years of control means nothing since they could easily be the next Swanson.

we needed a high-leverage RP most of all (Seranthony) and a real good SP almost as much (The Biebs, hopefully). At that point, we didn't *need* to do anything else, but another bullpen piece and a RH bench bat were nice to haves (Varland and France).

A bit torn on Bednar - dude was a high-end closer until he completely fell apart last year, and everyone sort of gave him a mulligan coming into this year... where he was just as inconsistent the first couple of months and lost the job again, even got sent to the minors.

It appears he's been really good since his recall, and we could have beaten the package they got for him, but I can see this guy coming into the 7th or 8th of a crucial game and melting down. Would have loved to get Jax, though.

He just started throwing way harder this year somehow.
Happens a lot when people move from the rotation to the pen, velo plays up in 1-2 innings instead of trying to pace yourself over 5-6.

Looking at his stats, he's always had excellent command. Will be really nice to have a guy come out of the pen who can throw strikes.
