Around The League - 2025 Offseason

Why are you so sure your kid would die? He could just as easily come home as a decorated war hero; the first kid on his block to get a confirmed kill.

Unless, of course, he's fighting for the Russians. Then he's definitely going to catch a bullet or three.

I figure a couple of things- if your kid really excels at anything, you’re going to spend 15-20k on voice lessons, piano, golf, whatever

And, if you are capable of doing something at the highest level, do it at the highest level. No point in playing A hockey if you’re good enough to play AAA

I spend $20k a year on my kid’s hockey between winter, spring and training. It is what it is
I feel your pain

I added it up once and over the 15 years he played hockey, I figure I paid $200-250000 for it including travel. I would do it all again. When it ends, it was harder on me than on him I believe. There is a huge void in my schedule. My happiest times during the week were going to his games and practices.

Son loves soccer. Likely will get a red shirt position at a div 1 school locally - Dal, SMU, X, Acadia etc... we spend $250 - 350 per month on coaching and training and 1k per year for league play.

Hockey is a fucking money racket.

My youngest played softball, pitcher, ended up getting a full ride at a top private medical school worth $75k a year. Academic scholarship. You don't need sports to get where you want to be but she loved playing softball.

Not all of us have top academic kids

100%. He’s still in the midst of it but I always chat with old guys at the rink who miss coming to the rink and watching good youth hockey, finding out who’s good for the future etc. Their kids have finished playing and they still come to the rink

Yeah, my athletic kiddo might be on the scholarship margins of one of those olympic sports, so we’re trying to manage expectations. It doesn’t help that some older friends did go to the States and there is peer influence for sure. And it doesn’t help that their parents are loaded… (or indebted.)

At the end of the day, it doesn’t make much sense.
Swimming or wrestling ?
