2025 NHL UFA/Trade Thread

The thing about McTavish is that if you get him, you're signing him to significant money and term. But Hage is supposed to become the 2C in 2-3 years so why give up top tier assets to get McTavish?

The Habs only need a stop gap solution until Hage is ready. If we're lucky, that stop gap will be Dach. Otherwise, we will acquire one by the deadline.

McTavish will be more valuable as a 2C in the playoffs than Hage.

This season, sure. Virtually any NHL caliber centre would be more valuable right now than Hage. But we arent winning a Cup this season so who cares? We need a "for now" 2C who can be replaced in a couple of years with Hage, our "forever" 2C.

Who would you rather have for the next 8 years?

If the answer is McTavish, what is the willingness to pay?

That said, the premise that a 2C has to be part of the long term core is questionable if the two winger are bigly. Perhaps you can cycle through decent veterans.

All this bellyaching over a 2 line C and especially one that costs significant future assets (like Mason Mac) is non sensical to me.

If you feel that the team can’t make the playoffs with a significant two line C, then there’s no point in throwing away assets now. If you feel that the team can make the playoffs with what they have now but then would need an upgrade totwo line C to win a round or two in the playoffs then we are in rental territory at the deadline.

I’m in the latter category. I think the team can finish in the top four in the division with what they have and can afford to be patient.

My biggest issue, regardless of playoff hopes, is that we need a center for Demidov, and that will be beneficial for his development. McTavish is a perfect fit for the team from age to style. I'm willing to consider a valuable package to acquire this asset now rather than in 2-3 years.

I think we have a chance at playoffs this year, but it's far from a lock.

Then you may as well offer Hage. But there are several assets with which I'm unwilling to part:

Suzuki
Caufield
Slafkovsky
Demidov
Bolduc
Hutson
Guhle
Dobson
Reinbacher
Xhekaj
Fowler

Anyone else I'm willing to listen.

It will be very disappointing to miss after last year and while growth is not always linear, missing is a huge backward step.

Interesting part of all these McTavish rumors is even though Det is being forecasted as the front runner, an 8yr deal to a player coming off ELC goes totally against Stevie Ys career operating procedure & philosophy as GM - is he all of a sudden willing to change because he’s now on the hot seat & cant take a chance at missing playoffs again? Same applies for Verbeek, can he afford having a disgruntled young player in the locker room after ramming a short term deal down his throat?

I wouldn’t count Habs out of it, the end game might not end up being the acquisition cost it should theoretically be / being forecasted by many due to “other variables” at play

Bolduc, Reinbacher and either Xhekaj I'm willing. Not together mind you.

That's only simple if there's no such thing as a cap. And the assets it would take to get McTavish are the kind we cant really part with. Im not trading Reinbacher for McTavish. Or Guhle, and certainly it Hutson or Slafkovsky.
Mac is solid but no chance I am overpaying with multiple young prospects +++

He isnt the missing piece to anything right now

Team is on the right track , no need to put the metal to the pedal so fast
