How in the world is the 100% Richie episode the best episode?

The Christmas dinner episode is infinitely better. Not even in the same universe.
 
That being said, Fishes (the episode before) is also elite. The two episodes are probably the perfect contrasting bookends on what makes the show so good.

Yeah, I don't agree with those reviews at all. I don't like the way the episode played out for a while before we even knew what the hell was going on (dream sequence, past or present, where/why?). And as I said previously, for me the show really revolves around Carmy and his story. When they devote too much focus to a supporting character, like the whole episode being about him, I lose interest, even though Richie is one of the better ones.

The contrast between it and the last episode was also a reason I didn't like it. The prior episode should've been a segue into something directly involving the family, and when it wasn't, and it wasn't even clear what was going on, it was a letdown.

I also don't even like the premise of the episode. Richie's whole thing is that he's a lifelong bum, but a quick stop at another kitchen whips him into shape overnight like a kid at some military academy? If he's now suddenly a shadow of his former self, it's tough to buy because it's not realistic, and it also removes the whole unique element he provided to the group. Hopefully the story unfolds with the change not really taking, and he reverts to his usual self.

Richie's character development is the best part of the show tbh.

Also helps that he's the best actor too.
 
I’ll take Rich episodes over Carmy

Carmy has to be one of the most morose characters on tv — has he cracked a smile even once during the entire run?
 
Carmy is, but he's supposed to be. The whole show is about him taking over his dead bro's failing restaurant, coming from a dysfunctional family, trying to create a life for himself. He's not going to be smiling much. But the introduction of the love interest really boosted it for me, because you're starting to see cracks now, where he maybe sees a little light at the end of the tunnel (after he even tried to avoid it by giving her the wrong number). If his story wasn't there, there's nothing here to see at all.

I don't know where Richie's character goes from this Severance episode, but this sudden transformation doesn't ring true. A guy who is used to being a loser and never even tried to amount to anything, doesn't just suddenly go to a kitchen boot camp, reinvent himself in presumably a week or two, especially where he thinks he was banished there for the purpose of getting rid of him and/or put him down. A guy like that who gets told to clean forks on the first day, under those circumstances, never comes back for the second day.

Never change, or do. I think im see benefits to both.


Forks is the best episode
