2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

The preseason game on September 24 against the Panthers is a benefit for the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation. Reserved seats on the glass are $100, reserved seats in rows 2 - 5 are $50 and all others are $10, general admission, first come, first served through a link on the website below. Tickets go on sale on Wednesday. Parking is free but donations are accepted.

NC State posted a video of Jaccob Slavin speaking to the football team leaders. He’s wearing a rather bulky knee brace. Did we know anything about that?
I spoke with somebody who goes to church with the Slavins. Apparently he had a "clean up" procedure on that knee relatively recently. He came back to Raleigh earlier than normal to have the team docs do the surgery. Should be ready to go for camp. So, no details but likely either cleaning up cartilage or a minor meniscus repairs. Pretty basic for a guy with his age.

In a shocking development, the Canes will have 10 national TV games. ESPN+ has 7, including opening night and TNT has 3. The NHL also announced game time changes for 6 of those games to accommodate TV. An additional game not on the TV schedule, the home game against Vegas on October 28, was moved to a 6:30 start.

Wait. They moved a random game on a Tuesday in October to a 6:30 start ... and it's not because of an East Coast/West Coast doubleheader? That's odd, man.

Jonas Brothers the next night, maybe they wanted an extra half hour to set up.

Yeah, some info leaked that the new general template was going to play off the unis from the outdoor game. Given Dundon's allergy to red, I'm thinking it might just be a white and black version of that look ... maybe with red on the secondary logos or something.

Givani Smith is one of those bigger, physical, hit everyone type of wingers who doesn't have any offensive skill at all.

Oliver Kylington could hang on as a #7, 8, 9 DMen if he is willing to sign 2 way contracts.

Kylington was a solid NHLer in Calgary before he took that year off to deal with mental health issues. Since he came back he's just never been the same player. He's a guy worth taking a flyer on, because if he's got his ducks in a row he can likely still play at a decent level, and he's only 28.

As for Smith, I honestly can't recall ever having seen him play. I'd assume he's more a tryout for the Wolves, as they could use some crash/bang up there with all the Canes small, skilled prospects.

Marner says he rejected the trade to the Canes because he didn’t want to be a deadline player and his wife was 6 or 7 months pregnant and he didn’t want to leave her behind in Toronto. There were also discussions with Vegas as a 3rd team, where Marner would have ended up in Vegas, Rantanen in Toronto and the Canes with scraps. That was scuttled because the Canes and Vegas couldn’t agree on a return.

Yeah, pretty much the same info that has been tossed around since the deadline but from the source instead of his camp. Honestly, with as many moving parts as there were at the time I remain impressed that Tulsky came out of that whole mess as well as he did. Swapping out getting spurned by Rantanen with getting spurned by Marner would have been freaking infuriating. And given the comments from Marner and his camp about their decision to sign with Vegas, that's 100% what would have happened. The big takeaway is to remember that even if you are a legit contender at a given time, if you're a smaller less glamorous market then don't bother trading for high end players without term on their contracts. I think you have a shot at that kind of guy if you get him in for a couple of years but when it's a bang, bang decision on the market ... yeah, no.

Oh, and if a guy has a "camp" then he can eff off.
