Who is the potential last piece of the puzzle then it both VP and GM are filled?

Since the Gillis talk died down no one has really touched on POHO and only focused on the GM and Sundin's potential role.

They were only planning on hiring 1 guy initially. Just a GM. Now they're hiring 2. I doubt they will hire a 3rd to be above Mats. That guy is gonna be Pelley.

I mean they might be doing it but it makes less sense.

I just mean it seems like they interviewed Gillis, were like nah, but then seemingly hired his people.

Honestly it seems to me that they interviewed gillis once prior to firing Tre, once on zoom during this interview process, and then decided to go a different direction (Sundin).

I think the media got a little carried away on him, and maybe Mike's team himself helped fuel those leaks. That was certain what the child molester implied.

If Chayka getting hired is dependent on Sundin accepting his own job offer, hopefully Mats and his family save us from the Frosty Fuckwit by deciding they’d prefer to keep living private, rich people lives in Sweden and turn down the job.

I was partial to Jr. Bacon Jerkoff, myself

I just find it very coincidental they pivoted to a guy Gillis suggested would make good management material in 2008 and a guy whose analytics company they almost bought, that’s all.

Maybe he didn’t even want the job and threw Mats name out there since it didn’t come from the search firm supposedly.

I don't understand why the Chayka hire is dependant on Sundin saying yes? Seems like they're lining themselves up for another convoluted power structure where decisions never get made

I think it's wrong that many people are more upset about the Leafs clearly moving towards the data direction than they were in late era Dubas and when they hired Treliving, where they were clearly losing faith in analytics. I get that they had an elite team at the time so temperatures were lower, but the trajectory here is positive imo. All of the potential candidates other than maybe Mehta were very unproven, though I guess the difference is, Chayka proved to be shit in his previous situation, so I do get that piece of it. But that doesn't mean he'll be shit in Toronto with a much more robust team of nerds surrounding him.

If Chayka actually values analytics and is pushed to use them with every decision he makes, this is a major step forward and not something they've done in a long while.

this duo would

a) be a considerable cost saving move (Shanahan reportedly made 6-7 million)

b) have less clout to prevent Pelley's interference (which is also why Sundin is VP instead of President)

Being a fan of math doesn’t help if you’re an incompetent, wholly unqualified fuckwit. Who not only has a track record of being greasy, self-serving and unethical, but is bad at that too, since he got caught twice by the NHL.

If we hire this guy, there’s no polishing that turd, no matter how much you try.

I don’t know who Sundin is at all in terms of his opinions on building a hockey team so difficult in that way to offer an opinion on him. This isn’t someone who’s been in a media role where we’re very aware of any stupid takes.

Could be good, could be bad, probably can’t be worse than Tre.

I would *hope* that given his career playing for Quinn’s teams, his idea is for us to play a lot like those teams and that bc he was a high skilled player who at times didn’t have enough skill surrounding him, bringing in more skill guys is the priority again. But I’m just making guesses. It’ll be interesting to hear a presser.

I’m a little skeptical on Chayka.

I'm not sure it is dependant on that, they just probably prefer to announce them together. I think the real question is whether they plan to hire a VP or President of hockey Ops if Mats says no. That part, I'm not sure of. Or who that pres or VP would be, if they decide to hire one.

I get this. You were equally mad about Tre, so I'll give you a pass. I see many others who are angrier about this hire than they were about Tre. That is dumb IMO.

In any case, I have more faith in people than most here. I like giving people the benefit of the doubt and am curious to see what Chayka can do in this market. His heart is in the right place, and he was just a kid when he got hired the first time around. I think he'll likely do better here. More support, more and better resources, 10 years older, etc.

Rogers is also greasy, self-serving and unethical

match made in heaven

ultimately I think Rogers will have to sell the Leafs though. their real business ain't going so good.

It was reported that Pelley was talking to lots of people in and out of the organization before they fired Tre. Maybe he just has a relationship with Gillis or was recommended to talk to Gillis and it was never about working for the Leafs but about what the Leafs should do.

I really wish he was a Burger King franchisee though, I feel like we could come up with some great nicknames based around the Whopper.

Chayka is so underrated.

He wasn't given a Wendy's by his dad. He bought Wendy's franchises with the money he made on the analytics company he created and now owns 50+ and is on the Wendy's Canada board. Straight up gangster.
