Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Feels like the third and fourth rounds have been shit hockey. People ooh and ahh over that 5-4 game this series, but it was actually pretty trash hockey that allowed a team to go up 4-0 and then for the other one to score 4 in the last 10 minutes. All the low shot games. Lack of superstars in the last two rounds have made it a bit of a snooze. If not for this Marner storyline, I doubt I’d even know who was up in the series right now.

I think what this does is ensures Raddysh tests his market. This is his big shot at life altering money and 28 millie from Tampa is nice, but 48 million from somewhere else is much better, state taxes or no.

Yeah, unless he just absolutely adores playing in Tampa, I expect he’ll test the market too. If he was a fringey forward who’s offers might evaporate after the first few days of free agency, he probably jumps at the deal.

But he’s one of the two top defensemen available in a thin free agent market, so the offers will definitely be there for him.

Yeah, this would be as fucking perfect as possible if it happens.

- The team Mitch left moves on with Gavin McKenna
- The team Mitch vetoed trade to wins cup
- The team Mitch appears to have specifically chosen to leave for, a move potentially more than a year in the making before his arrival, benefits from the best playoff run of his career and still can't win
- Even during the best playoff run of his career, Mitch didn't show up when it really mattered

Sure they can a 7x 7.75 offer is equal to 6 x8 in take home pay

Nah, you're forgetting the signing bonus taxation fuckery that Tavares got caught up in (Tavares ended up winning, so is now precedent) exists.

So if the deal is front loaded and heavy in 1st year signing bonuses, they are not equal offers. With the benefit of the 7 yr offer leaving a better opportunity of a late career 2-4 yr deal if he's still good. He'll be 37 at the end of that deal. So maybe/probably cooked by then, but that 8th year would have value to him in negotiations now. He and his agent aren't just going to assume that it's a dead year that can be used for free by Tampa to keep his AAV cheaper.

He can maintain his "permanent" residence as a tax entity in Florida, there is an additional tax benefit on "jock tax" games played outside of Canada. That's likely another 100-200K a year in tax home pay as well on the side of the 7.75 x 7

They didn't even make the playoffs in the pillow fight pacific.
The pillow fight of the pacific is one of the reasons i think he chooses them.

I have the Leafs ending up with John Carlson, who i think wants to go back East and or my money might end up being the best value D that is signed this year. He's still really really good

The bottom line is pretty much this. If Tampa wanted to match Toronto offering the AFP suggested 8.05 million at 7 years (to combat the 8 year theoretical offer here that is super fucking unlikely Tampa would consider making...there's a reason they started at 5 yrs in talks), and Toronto offered the deal in the most tax advantageous way they can (Which would be approx 10.5 millie in the first season, 9.5 of that in signing bonus taxed at a far lower rate, saving him about 4 million in taxes on that alone)...Tampa would have to be somewhere in the range of 6.7 million x 8 to match the total value of the 8.05 x 7...which is of course, from Raddysh's standpoint, giving Tampa a year of his career for free just so they they can save money.

The more likely fight here is what Tampa would have to do if they wanted to match Raddysh's take home pay on a deal in the range of the AFP 8.05 x 6 deal if it was offered by the Leafs. That number, dependent on various types of accounting fuckery, is about 7.5 million in this specific instance.

Carlson and Kane/Zuccarrello are what i would be doing as Chayka.

Older dudes at shorter term higher AAV, i think thats where the value is going to be. I suspect the folks going 6-7 years for guys liek Raddysh, Anderson, Tuch, Jenner and Mantha are going to be largely disappointed, even i i am advocating my own team to be in on Tuch

But....we're not in a panic to win, we just need to get better. Throwing multi year deals at olds...meh. Carlson is somewhat interesting because at least he's still good at 5v5, but no 90 yr old PP specialist forwards pls.
