2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Martinook said post game, and I don’t recall the exact question, but the one teammate he acknowledged missing was Jesper Fast. The one teammate and linemate he regretted having to retire and missing out on the winning of the Cup. I got a bit choked up about that one.
But on a happy note, isn’t Quickie on the teams payroll as a scout or advisor so he would get a ring?

Yes, Martinook said he was scouting for the team in Europe. Perhaps, Fast does get a ring, but I suspect he’s further down the pecking order now.

Does DesLaurier get a ring? He was a trade deadline acquisition and I think only got 6 minutes playing time in one game in the OTT series. His on ice role was limited, but his celebratory spirit was next level and involved cigars, beer and a plastic vuvuzela on a bar top!

The team can gives rings to whomever they want. They’re going to have to petition the league to get his name engraved on the Cup.

Yes Martinook got interviewed by swedish televison when he was on the ice after the game and got a question about Fast so maybe that was the interview you saw, or at least Martinook got to think of Fast in that moment.

Yeah, Kotkaniemi (42 games) qualifies to get his name on the Cup but not Deslauriers, since you either need 41 regualr season games or at least one game in the Final … the final round, not the playoffs in general. As you say, they can appeal. Mike Reilly also barely qualified with 42 games, and they might want to petition to include guys like Nystrom (38 games), Legault (12 and a long term injury) and Nadeau (12) who spent a fair amount of time with the club. Not sure how they handle backup goalies who dress but don’t play in the Final but I’d assume Kochetkov will get his name on there one way or another.

For staff, they don’t normally include scouts aside from the director of scouting but I guess they could appeal for Quickie. We’re going to get all those new minority ownership partners, so everybody should buckle up for that. The team submits a list of names for owners and staff and they follow a set of league guidelines, IIRC.

Requesting a waiver for Nystrom should be a slam dunk. The others…maybe.

They got waivers for Andrew Hutchinson and Anton Babchuk in 2006. Part of the rationale is that they spent their entire season with the Canes, or in Babchuk’s case, the entire time after the trade. None of Nystrom, Legault or Nadeau did. But they have 55 spaces, so we’ll see.

These are the staff members listed in 2006.

Coaching and administrative staff

  • Peter Karmanos, Jr. (CEO/Owner/Governor), Thomas Thewes (Owner), Jim Rutherford (President/General Manager), Davin Olsen (Vice President-Arena Manager)
  • Jason Karmanos (Vice President/Asst. General Manager), Mike Amendola (Chief Financial Officer), Peter Laviolette (Head Coach)
  • Kevin McCarthy (Asst. Coach) Jeff Daniels (Asst. Coach), Greg Stefan (Goaltending Coach/Pro Scout), Chris Huffine (Video Coordinator)
  • Skip Cunningham (Asst. Equipment Manager, Wally Tatomir (Equipment Manager), Bob Gorman (Asst. Equipment Manager), Peter Freisen (Athletic Therapist/Strength-Conditioning Coach)
  • Chris Stewart (Asst. Athletic Therapist), Brian Tatum (Director of Team Services), *Kelly Kirwin (Event Coordinator-Hockey Operations), Mike Sundheim (Director of Media Relations), Kyle Hanlin (Manager of Media Relations)
  • Sheldon Ferguson (Director Amateur Scouting), Marshall Johnston (Director Pro Scouting), Claude Larose (Scout), Ron Smith (Scout)
  • (Tony MacDonald (Scout), Martin Madden (Scout), Bert Marshall (Scout), Tom Rowe(Scout)

But again, for anyone stressing about the names on the Cup … they can hand out as many rings as they want.

All joking aside, the Mayors office is expecting up to 100,000 people downtown for the parade and celebration on Saturday. PLEASE have a (realistic) plan if you’re going to go. The idea of securing a hotel room is a good one, but you’ll need to nail something down fairly soon and plan on hunkering down once you get there. Ubers/Lyfts and cabs will be expensive and hard to come by on the day. Downtown hotel rooms sell out for Hopscotch and the Bluegrass Festival (RIP) every year, with WAY less people involved. Just sayin … I may be out of the travel planning business these days, but you’ll want to plan ahead. This ain’t the Raleigh Christmas Parade where you can make a spur of the moment decision and have a great time. It also ain’t 2006 anymore, Toto.

Yup... that's why my choices were between skip it all and watch on TV, or (what i did) grab the downtown hotel room near the city plaza and just plan to walk the few blocks from there to best spot we can get Saturday morning, then walk back to hotel and wait it all out afterwards. We'll probably still regret it and wish we'd opted for the TV, but I'm not dealing at all with driving into, or out of, that mess day of.

NHL Network and ABC11 will be airing the parade in its entirety. ABC11 will also live stream it on their site.

Remember 2006 when they did a loop around the arena for the parade then had a stage and screens set up in one of the parking lots? Yeah.... 😀

There was also a parade through downtown.
They did drive the boys in open top cars to a stage at City Plaza for the speachifying, but for some reason it never got billing over the parking lot thing and the thing downtown kind of came together last minute. It was a weird time down at City Hall. Meeker never had much of a feel for the people when it came to that sort of thing and the city wasn’t really used to hosting big events downtown. It’s a different era now that they’ve hosted festivals for years and aren't terrified of crowds.
