The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I was willing to write off this Bob stuff as just BS from his agent at first, but there’s too much smoke now. Between Florida clearly moving on in net and Friedman being so certain, this isn’t looking good.

If and when we sign him, any goodwill that Chayka’s built up with me since he was hired is going to evaporate. Just a catastrophic mistake.

Pretty funny that these dumdums have been beating the "Mo will for sure be traded" drum for weeks, including elliotte himself just a day ago.

Now Elliotte clearly got better intel saying that it won't happen. So the others will follow and act like they never guaranteed that Mo will be shipped.

I hope the same happens with Bob. But this kind of thing is so often leaked on June 30th and made official shortly after 12pm. This just feels like that.

I don’t mind an old goalie. Eddie the Eagle had a bit of a late career surge here. If it’s small term, the fine. Stolarz’s health will never make him more than a backup.

I like the idea of Bob.

Florida players all had a bad year.

His work ethic and preparation would be perfect for hildeby and AA to learn from.

I think you trade Stolarz in season to up his value a bit, but you sign Bob for four years and you do a massive signing bonus in year one and two.

I want Bob and Hildeby combo with AA getting some time with the big club. Stolarz can go at around the 10 game mark.

I'm team Bob/Belfour....and Bob is the total opposite of taking care of one's self

I must have the best intel since I've been saying this whole time that Rielly isn't being traded. He has trade protection, he's well-liked, he's coming off a down year in the team's worst season in over a decade and so he wouldn't get good return value, he's signed for a reasonable number given where contracts have gone, and when he's good and in a good system he's a mobile guy with good transition skills and can put up points. There is zero reason to trade him other than just wanting to stubbornly dump him and move on. This takes no intel. It takes logic and realism.

Same thing for Knies and Werenski. Chayka is trying to build something around Cowan and other players if he's going after Werenski, and won't get stupid because he doesn't need Werenski. San Jose needs Werenski. The fever dream here of landing this guy isn't going to take Chayka's mental faculties out. Again, this is basic.

And Bob might be bad but Stolarz will be non-existent and absent for most of the season. If the plan is to turn the reins over to Hildeby and Arty, and Bob would sign for cheap ($4M) to take on more of a mentor role rather than undisputed #1, to bring these guys along, that's very okay. A multiple cup winner who has a lot to teach, especially to a Russian kid. And Stolarz might get something good back as a free asset. If Bob isn't reasonable, they will look past him. There's nothing to worry about.

So far, he's done great. Raddysh is the skilled solid D that we needed and he got him for free. He brought in a useful young D for guys he didn't need. He drafted McKenna. He traded Carlo off for the best return that was available. He didn't qualify Maccelli. All perfectly according to plan. He's not going to suddenly lose his head and make idiot moves now.

Signing the oldest goalie in the league to a 4 year deal is crazy talk
Retire after year 2 and the whole cap hit comes off....same with Tanev.

Chayka won't have a problem doing what's best for the club and using robidas Island....but he won't have to cuz thw cap is going through the roof.

Team Bob for sure

Bob said he wanted the marchand deal...longer term to get the max money...and he feels betrayed.
It is about money for him. So sign him for 6x4 or 4x 6 to give him 24 million in two years up front and having a 6 or 4 million dollar goalie mentor your future in a cap of 113 or whatever it is.

That's a bargain.

The panthers shucked last year because of one guys injury Barkov.

He's going to have a better team this year on the leafs and even if he gives you league average....hell give you 50 games with his eyes closed and teach hildeby and AA hoe to train

Isn't this like the 4th time this summer "too much smoke" has turned out to be, in fact, generated by the Toronto media smoke machine? Matthews would rather die than come to training camp, Berube will return, etc, etc, etc.
