The Official 2026-27 Leafs Season Thread: New Regime, Who Dis?

Not a single team is gonna be horny about subtracting from their top 6 forwards at this stage. Columbus needs to lower their expectations, aim for a more future oriented package, or just wait if they expect to get anything close to Knies.
 
I'm always happy to add a good player, especially one that is a clear 1st line winger. They should do more of that and less of the 4th line scrub thing. Columbus just doesn't have much leverage, so they're not gonna get great value for him. I bet Montreal puts forth the best package in the end. Leafs can dangle the Ted Danson's and Cowan's, but I'm not sure how much further than that they'd be willing to go.
 
I don’t see what hope Columbus has to legitimately compete, especially when we know Werenski has one foot out the door. Any trade they make should be for futures, not roster players, and they should send Werenski out soon too. Rebuild time.

Laughable to suggest Marchenko would or should cost “Knies+”. Marchenko+ for Knies would still be a bad trade for the Leafs.
 
I also dont think Marchenko is a guy worth paying for. I'm always wary of guys getting clear 1st line offensive usage who are putting up pedestrian production for the role. For Marchenko to be worth it at his production level, he would have to be a good 2 way, all situations type guy, which he is not.

Last year was their shot to make the post with Panthers and Leafs taking the year off … they almost made it but all their scorers choked down the stretch.

They’ve been rebuilding forever and now they’re over the cap and the fan base wants results. Waddell is also not in a great position to tell his bosses “can you trust the process for another half decade?”

My initial question was: How would the Pens or Flyers missing the playoffs help the Leafs making them ?

I never received a rational answer...

Again, if you think some non playoffs teams from the Metro may improve and stay ahead of the leafs, then obviously the pens or flyers missing the playoffs makes that a non factor.
