2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

for me it's the stupidity that grinds me, not so much the selfishness.

the players deserve whatever they can get. i don't care.

but how some of these guys don't realize that sacrificing literally 10% of their basic salary could potentially result in an entire lifetime of love and affection (and the resulting money in endorsemennts and post career earnings) and a career of less pressureversus an entire lifetime of being reviled and under constant overwhelming pressure.....it's just crazy to me.
Same. If I were in the position of Marner, I'd do some crazy shit to rehab my reputation with the team and the city.

I'd sign a one year deal with the Leafs for whatever Tavares signs for, and would say here's my redemption year - go use the excess to sign another great forward like Bennett and let's win it next year. If we do, I'm asking for my fair price long term then, but would keep it within reason, like $12M per.

We're going to have a pretty significant difference of opinion if we're referring to Mitch Marner as "their leading scorer" and worrying about how we're going to replace him.

The team isn't in the place it's in because of regular season performance.

To put your points a different way: They're about to lose 2 forwads who combined for 2 points (both scored by Mitch fwiw) in the 5 playoff games we played this year that were games 5-6-7 of a series. Fwiw again, Max fucking Domi had 4 points in those 5 games.

In every game 5-6-7 combined since Tavares arrived in Toronto, Mitch and JT have combined for 15 points total in those games. 3 goals. 20 fucking games we needed to win and 22 million dollars annually got us 3 goals over 7 years. We're not losing anything. We're gaining the ability to not have a 22 million dollar void in our playoff lineup.
Marner is the 7th highest scorer in hockey since he entered the league, and has more career playoff points than 34 and 88.

There’s no dissonance in thinking that letting him go is the right thing to do for the team to get over the playoff hump while at the same time acknowledging they have enormous shoes to fill.

Holy shit I thought it was speculation that they aren’t replacing shanahan.

fuck, these people get in the mlse chair and become so arrogant.

Shanahans exit had nothing to do with results. That’s scary.

Definitely don't add Matthews and Nylander's 5-6-7 stats to the mix since those would make it the situation seem so much rosier.

Auston and Willy combined for more game 5-6-7 goals in these playoffs (4), than Mitch and JT combined for over the last 7 years. Auston has 8 goals in those 20 games, Willy also has 8. If we want to include game 4-5 from the goofy game series against Columbus. Auston & Willy both have 9 in 22 games, Tavares 4, Mitch 0.

Yes...Auston should be better, scoring at a 34 goal pace in those situations is less than we want but it's also not bad at all. Willy, that's on point. Tavares is dreadful though, he's scored at a 17 goal pace in those situations (yes...I took out the Montreal games he missed, and I actually didn't do that for games Auston or Willy missed)...and Mitch is historically embarrassing.

If the goal is to win the playoffs, I disagree that there's no dissonance there. If the goal is to win late series playoff games, those are baby shoes mate.

Good luck with that

it bothers me a bit that Tavares is so sure he's coming back, even at 5 million or whatever

Leafs better think long and hard about that one. JT can't really produce in the important times any more as it is.

At 5 millie of a 95 million dollar cap I'm okay with a guy who does what he does, even with the playoff performance.

If we signed a 5 million dollar centre last free agency period and he gave us 32G/50PT place pace and 55% on the draws this past playoffs, I'm fine with that.

What about just games 6-7?

Do you remember who scored the winning goal against Tampa 2 years ago? That was the act of someone who wanted to win

The one where he fired a blind turnaround at the net from 20 feet away?

He stays to the outside the entire sequence, never even getting close to doing anything threatening and then kind of just gives up trying to do something useful and wings it blindly on net hoping for a tip (which is a good enough play in that situation). It went in, so that's fucking beautiful and I'll take it, but let's calm down about what it says about John Tavares' will to win.

If that went in against us, if that was Brayden Point firing a spinorama from the dot, we would be calling it a muffin.

The shot obviously was lucky, but he made an awesome play to get to being able to take that shot, basically doing a full lap around the zone while being chased.

We would’ve pissed our pants over it if one of the 20 dummies did that in game 3 against Florida.

Like I said, I'll take it. We won, was awesome.

I was addressing specifically what I was addressing, nothing more.

He’s a steal at $5m

I'd rather find a younger quicker player. but if he does come back it should be at wing on the third line. He can still be a decent depth player and should be viewed as such going forward.
