The first thing made the second thing inevitable. The smarter course of action would have been to not acquire veteran players who were failures and poor leaders elsewhere hoping they'd be successful good leaders with the Leafs. Marleau and Jumbo were garbage players who failed to win big games anywhere and everywhere they played. Only a moron would think they'd suddenly turn into leaders just by putting on a blue and white jersey.

Your point is correct. But even if they have won cups, why overpay for a "Mentor". They got Jason Spezza a total of 3 seasons at NHL minimum and he did a better job.
 
He's already "won" because he has everyone wondering "will he stay or won't he?" when what the Leafs should simply be telling him and his dad is to fuck off.
