The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

For some reason, our "insiders" also think that they are hockey experts, which muddies what they think with what they report.
That's where Dreger and Lebrun fail miserably. They mix their hockey opinions with inside information, and it all becomes a jumbled up mess. No one wants to hear their opinions, but they seem to think they do and half the time you can't tell if it's a rumor or a dumbass opinion from a stupid person (even stupider than Jonas).

Yeah, Friedman is the NHL's version of Shams. And yes, he does tend to waffle at times, but he's very connected around the league and the most legit source for news.

Elliotte has integrity and standards for sure. Most of the TSN squad is baseless clickbait "reporting", with the exception of MJ and Corrado.

Only a week in but he does seem to be a good fit with how he handles the media and answers questions. Got really tired of the Treliving empty folksy bullshit.

seems like a good fit in most every way tbh.

from what I gather there's two major strikes supposedly against him:

1. He 'failed' in arizona. From my analysis of his performance there in a very tough situation, i don't think his performance was even bad, let alone terrible. I'd lean towards pretty good, considering the resources and unique pressures he had there.

2. He has pissed off the league and the old boys network a bunch of times. But for me, that's actually a plus.

Halpern has thrived in Tampa Bay’s collaborative environment, where the coaches are in constant dialogue with one another and with the team’s analytically-inclined front office. “The best part of the job is that you’re in this think tank, so to speak, of great hockey minds,” Halpern says. “If you have an idea, you have an analytics department that can support your thought or take shots at it.”

Oh wait I see why they'd be interested

“I think when you have an idea that you want to get through to the players, they are extremely smart, they are very well informed,” Halpern says. “Going back to when I played, we didn’t have access to the video and to all the information that these players have. So, if you’re telling a player to go left instead of right, the player, I’m sure, has an opinion on that. You have to present your case. You have to show him why you want him to go a certain way. There’s got to be data behind it. There’s got to be examples behind it. It can’t necessarily just be, ‘Do this.’

Yeah.

And the best part of all, he's Jewish. Makes up for not hiring Evan Gold (LOF) as GM.

I'm anti-retread in general but Cassidy for me is one legit exception. IMO he resurrected and kept that Bruins team elite far past their due date by implementing a great possession system. And i wasn't surprised when he immediately won a cup in vegas after moving on.

But i'm happy to see them a full search for others. no other retread piques my interest.
