2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

As much as I dislike Babcock (or his reputation), I hope he’s able to bring some structure to that team. Their management/front office is guilty of longstanding malpractice, yet have the best player in hockey.

And as for expansion, there’s been a slow swell for another team in each division, especially after how well the Utah move went. Atlanta (Gwinnett) and Texas … probably Houston … seem to be in play. This is the first I’ve heard of Austin being involved. And before you downplay Atlanta, you all know by now that the strength of the owner is more important than the market itself so long as the market is viable. Atlanta is viable but never had credible ownership before.

Atlanta has been mentioned for years and they apparently have a robust group heading it up.....and they wont make the mistake of going to downtown ATL again and will likely end up in Gwinnett (as you mentioned) or even Cobb County with the Braves

Tsyplakov was truly horrible last season, so that’s just a contract dump. Amazing that the Islanders got conned into signing him to a deal worth north of $2 million based on one decent season with Spartak. They dumped him on NJ, who in turn have dumped him on Calgary. So, this is basically just Nemec for multiple picks and a prospect who was a 2nd round pick in 2023. That’s a LOT to get for Nemec, who has a lot to prove as an NHL defenseman no matter how much you allow for NJ’s mishandling of his development. If it works, then Calgary will be getting a dynamic playmaker on the back end. If not, then they’re getting a mistake factory who can run a power play. I like Nemec’s upside a lot, but that’s a risky investment.

The term sheet for a team in Texas is $3.5 billion with includes the expansion fee and cost of a new arena. if it’s Houston, that will be a standalone building for the new team, they won’t be playing in the Toyota Center which is owned by Harris County Houston Sports Authority but operated by the Houston Rockets. The arena was home to the AHL Houston Aeros from 2003-13, when they relocated to Iowa.

The AHL Texas Stars play in Austin suburb Cedar Park in a 6,800 seat arena, owned by the city and operated by the Stars.

OK, so … St Louis moved well off of their “three serious pieces” price for Kyrou. They got a middling prospect, the 16th pick and Connor McNotDavid. That’s … fine, I guess. I like McMichael’s upside as a middle 6 center if St Louis will give him a shot there. I thought the Caps made a mistake moving him to wing. He’s a very A to B kind of center, but that’s useful in the middle of your lineup. And Washington gets what they actually need, which is scoring on the wing. McMichael wasn’t really doing it and I don’t believe in Leonard as a volume scorer either. Pus, Kyrou is fully baked. He popped in 3 consecutive 30 goal seasons before the Blues started dangling him as trade bait. Good deal for everyone? Probably.

I’m more intrigued by the Sharks/Sens trade. Eklund has a LOT of upside and has already produced two 50-something point seasons. There’s reason to think his goal scoring will come along in a more mature forward group. High skill, high ceiling, not a giant dipstick … all good things for a team that needs all of those things. There are some that are high on Svoboda as a depth center prospect as well. Pretty good haul for a pick they just got yesterday. He’s on a good value contract too … 3 years at $5.6 million AAV. That might even get you a year or two of very, very good value if his goal scoring levels up.

And for San Jose, moving Eklund removes any hesitation to take Stenberg at 2 in the draft, and still allows them to grab one of the deep group of defense prospects at 9. So, pretty good business for everyone, I’d think.

Seravalli and Friedman report that the Slugs are sending dman Bowen Byram to Chicago for a package that includes the 4th overall pick. Details to come.
