2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

This news makes me want to ignore the NBA even harder, if that's even possible.

How does Kwahi Leonard get off the hook on this deal? I know he was fined $700K, but he probably has that much between the couch cushions or in a sock drawer. He's only made $375 Mil career earnings (so far) That fine seems weak especially because he's the root of the reason all this sh!t went down. No ban or punishment besides a financial slap on the wrist? Isn't his uncle his represtative/agent, so how is that guy's not paying any kind of penalty as well? I guarantee the agent was driving some of these deals. Kwahi's just going to slither off to Toronto and do his best to scam that ownership. I'm sure that the Clippers held guns to their heads and forced them to take all that money, though I understand this isn't the first time the Clippers have been caught in this kind of B.S.. For shame.

They happen everywhere from high school college and pro sports. In high school and college it’s no show classes and now a lot of these NIL gigs are shams and why you see that college sports commission looking into these deals…… making schools/athletes restructure their deals correctly. It happens at UNC it happens at Duke it happens at NC State…. Hell it even happens at freaking Campbell. It’s what sports (pro and college) has even more increasingly become…..greedy, unscrupulous people doing greedy, unscrupulous things.

Sure ... I get that. But IMO that doesn't get to be a mitigating factor when one of these situations gets exposed. If teams in every Cap league are playing games to circumvent Salary Caps, then it's on the various leagues to do a better job of enforcing their rules. God knows they generate enough money to pay their executives unholy amounts of money. So it's not a matter of cash, it's a matter of resource allocation.

SEC made good on their threat - continuing with the unscrupulous human theme.....they have filed a suit against Kiffin and LSU over their intent to play pro players cut from NFL training camps. Several SEC presidents and AD's are wanting to kick LSU out of the conference.....injunctions be damned lol

The threat and impact of home cooked injunctions only goes so far. When a single rogue team (LSU in this case) declares that they're not going to follow conference rules and by-laws then the conference really doesn't have much choice but to sanction them. If they have to throw them out, then so be it. LSU has developed some sort of fetish for flaunting norms lately, but all conferences have red lines that you'll find eventually. You CHOOSE to be a part of a conference structure and while there's always tension between members, when trust breaks down to that degree ... yeah. It's not going to work.

This is all just SO stupid. LSU is risking everything for a handful of guys, none of whom are really difference makers. Texas Tech walked this path before and eventually backed down, but at least that was over a QB and not a tight end and a couple of defensive drones. And while they saved their conference affiliation, Texas Tech is having a hell of a time scheduling games. LSU might find themselves in the same boat when they try to build their non conference schedule next year.
 
On yesterday's (9/2) Dan Patrick radio show, RGIII talked about what it was like when he played before the NIL era. Pretty much said that the claim of the landscape being the wild west right now is funny since it was the wild west back then. The whole interview is great as they cover multiple topics, but here the most interesting part.

I posted the Stanford stuff here a while ago and not a lot of people believed me. When I say EVERYBODY does it, EVERYBODY does it. And the 'everybody does it' does not mean it should be condoned....its rather to caution others about complaining about School A, when their school is doing the exact same shit........ And RGIII is protecting is alma mater a little bit there, which is to be expected, they paid a TON of people under the table. I was talking to a kid that transferred from Baylor to an ACC school back in 2022 (Not UNC or State) and he said when he was being recruited by Baylor, they took his group out to eat and he thought it was lame that they just walked them into this italian restaurant and they were handed their own 'personal' pizza boxes and told to get back on the bus so they can eat it on the way to their next stop...... it was then he didn't think it was lame as there wasn't a single slice of pizza in that box lol

Similar to the Deems May story - who was at Carolina in the late 80's......he went on a visit to Texas and confirmed the "cash in cowboy boots' scheme was alive in well in 1987

I randomly looked back at UNC’s 1987 football schedule. My how times have changed. Out of conference games were Navy, Auburn, Illinois and Oklahoma. Good times.
 
Having known a handful of football players in college, they were getting paid in more ways than one back in the 90s too. Cars, cash, etc. Even a "leased" vehicle that you are allowed to drive for 2 or 3 years, is still payment. A huge chunk of the team had brand new Mustangs and F150s on "lease". One guy "got" a brand new 7 series BMW. Supposedly his agent let him borrow it. Watched people line up to hand wads of cash to the starting QB in a seedy bar downtown one night. We watched for 10 minutes trying to figure out what was happening. A long line of people, mostly young women, handing him wads of cash, smiling and walking away. Imagine an autograph line, but no autographs.
 
Dan Patrick has said a lot over the years that football coach that was a source for him told him that when he found out a kid that he was recruiting was also being recruited by an SEC school, he would give up because he knew that he couldn't afford the kid. LOL
