2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Howard was a gem and a walking encyclopedia of Wolfpack and bowling knowledge. He owned an alley in Fayetteville for a long, long time and drove a ton of extra miles to be there for State broadcasts compared to the other guys. RIP to a legit legend.
 
Could we please stop with the "Week 0" B.S. for college football? It's beyond idiotic and means nothing. The week before they start playing for real is week zero. Just Stop It. To me, it's up there with "score the basketball" for dumb sayings parroted by talking heads.

You'll be glad to know that the NCAA has adjusted its official football schedule for next year. Week 0 will now be Week 1 and the first full weekend will be the last week in August. Fun

While were at it...can the Davey Doeren experiment please finally end and you put the lame dog down??? This is getting ridiculous...just go find someone new, if for no other reason than to try something different, that shit is getting painful to watch year in and year out.

Kroenke Sports and Emtertainment is acquiring a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels. It’s expected to close early next year.

That gives them a team in each of the major US sports. They already own the La Rams, Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche. The also own Arsenal Football Club, men’s and women’s teams, MLS Colorado Rapids and the Colorado Mammoth box lacrosse team.

 
That ends the fairly sad saga of Artie Moreno's ownership of the Angels. Hard to believe that Moreno kept it going this long after the bribery and corruption scandal that brought down the previous Mayor of Anaheim and ended their redevelopment scheme in the early 2020s. He finally got his buyer and those poor, long suffering fans finally get a bit of hope in the form of the steady hands of the Kroenke group. There's a LOT of work to do, but those guys know how to run a professional franchise. They'll dig in and get to it.
 
Now that Moreno will not be the owner, Trout no longer has that relationship to draw on. New ownership is going to want to shake things up.

Sure Trout has full veto rights, but we are about to start a very long labor stoppage after this season and no matter what Trout says, I have a feeling that things are going to change on the 'I want to stay here forever' front.
 
The NBA hammered the LA Clippers for circumventing the salary cap when they signed Kawhi Leonard in 2022. They lost every first round pick from 2029-33, they were fined $30 million, owner Steve Ballmer was suspended from team and league activities for a year, President of Business operations Gillian Zucker was suspended without pay for a year, President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank was suspended without pay for 6 months and Leonard was fined $700k. It stems from Leonard signing a $28 million endorsement deal with a company that had a $300 million/23 year endorsement deal with the team.

 
The Clippers hadn't traded any of those first round picks away yet? The NBA gets absolutely nutty with trades sometimes involving draft picks that are 5+ years out. Officially you can trade away picks that are up to 7 drafts in the future.
 
Remarkable level of just flat out stupidity in that Clippers saga. Of course you were going to get caught eventually and of course you were going to get the big cartoon sledgehammer when you did eventually get caught. Duh. I haven't gotten too far into the formal punishment, but it doesn't sound like Leonard is paying nearly enough of a personal price for his role in this nonsense. His fine is what? $700K? And I don't think he's even suspended. What the actual hell?
