2014 WC Brazil|June 12th to July 13th|CBC/Sportsnet

I am legitimately 1/2 spanish from Spain (mother born there) and 1/2 Uruguayan (Father born there and brother)

I was taught to play like a Uruguyan, always on the edge of dirty and clean play. The Spaniards are definitely my second team, as for years they were always not good enough, but the last 4 years have been amazing for Spanish football. But my heart still cheers for Uruguay. A country where cows out number people in population. A place were I spend the 2-3 years growing up. I first started playing soccer on some "community centre" fields in Uruguay. Even my mom, who was born in Spain, has a special place in her heart for Uruguay.

Suarex has slowly turned himself into the top goal scorers in the world. And the last world cup really brought some of the top Uruguayans into the top leagues. I fear that the last world cup was the peak of Diego Forlan. (should have gotten the golden boot in the last world cup, with the tie for most goals, but IMHO had some of the best goals) With their performance they moved up in the fifa rankings like crazy.

I cheer for Spain for my mom's side of the fam. .. but "la celeste" and the "sangre Charrua" runs through my veins.

Didn't know that about you Hoss. That's interesting. After Bosnia and Croatia i would pick Uruguay as the next country i hope does well. Diego Forlan was pretty awesome...Suarez, not a big fan only cause he seems like an ass. lol..Good player though. :)

There's a nice video talking about Uruguay and Bosnia(roughly 30 minutes long) on cbc website. Not sure how they put those 2 in that video(not like they're in the same group) but anyways...

Do you ever visit Uruguay?

I have a pretty cool story of why my parents left Uruguay for Canada... but it's a pretty long one.

My mom's side left Spain when she was 14 because my grandfather owned a shoe factory, and Franco labelled him a socialist. So one day my gramps just went missing. 6 months later he showed up at my moms house 20lbs lighter from jail, and he basically took my family and left for Uruguay. At that time many spaniards left spain for Uruguay. While there she met my dad and they hit it off and got married. Had my brother and then in Uruguay the CIA and the JUNTA govt's that spread from Brazil to Chile to Argentina, made their way into Uruguay. My dad's sister married this guy that ended up being a member of the CIA's death squad. He was responsible for planting explosives on cars. My dad who worked as an autobody guy was asked to drive some dignitaries to something got all scared because he actually saw some CIA head honchos with my "uncle" (they were divorced shortly after)

My dad was asked to drive some guys and he knew it was a set up. The junta/cia would pretend to be revolutionaries (tupamarus) and kid nap gov't officials and torture them. My dad new this and literally took my mom and brother out of the country the next day.

Lived in Canada for a few years, and had me. When I was 2, my dad thought it'd be cool to go back, but things were not good yet. So we came back. Then at the age of 4 I went back for 2 years and lived there. We had a house and everything thinking we'd live there for good. This is also where my dad instilled the love of having two boys support rival teams. In Uruguay the two main teams are Penarol and Nacional. When my brother was about 4 my dad got him the full Nacional uniform and took pictures with it and all. But when I was born, he bought me a full Penarol uniform. He loved watching us fight and argue.

When we finally came back to Canada, my dad declared it was our home from now on. Because he knew how important soccer was to south America, he understood the importance of hockey. We watched HNIC every Saturday. My dad and brother supported the Habs, because he told me that they reminded him of the way the Brazilians played (this was the lafleur robinson era of les canadiens) but in typical fashion, he told me that I had to cheer for the leafs because I was born here in Toronto. He also just wanted my brother and I to be rivals. Funny man that way.

Sorry for the long post, but I've had some drinks, and I love that story because it's all true, and I know if I press for more info from my mom, the story is probably even more interesting.

Cool story. Thanks for sharing.

Political stability is something a lot of Canadians just flat out take for granted. My significant other is Mexican and some of the stories about government corruption, cartels, etc she tells, I simply don't have a personal reference point for.

Yeah, I sometimes get into arguments with war-hawks who talk a big game as long as the fighting is far away. Imagine sending your kids to school while gunfire is just down the road? We don't get it.

One of the songs for the WC. I like this one the best.

England squad for world cup... Defoe didn't make cut and it appears will not be heading to the pre world cup training.

I'll be cheering for a likely disappointing English team. They do have three Toffees...so they can't be all bad.

I have a bit of Portuguese and Spanish in me from my mom's side, so will be cheering for them. My dad's Slovenian but they didn't qualify. Will also be cheering for Bosnia, Croatia, and Italy.
