2015: Free Agency Frenzy

The 2015 NHL entry level draft is over, selections made and some dreams made and others were dashed. Free agency starts tomorrow and trades are still to be made. This will be the last flurry of activity before the league goes dormant for the summer and training camps start in September.

Very unlikely that the Hurricanes will dip their toes in free agency, unless it's to get another reclamation project. That being said, I will be on the sidelines seeing which players get an inflated contract while GMs trip over themselves.

Some former Canes are on the list-- Sekara, JWilliams and Tlusty.

FWIW, no word that Semin hit the waiver wire today-- looks like we'll see him in a canes jersey this October...
 
Use this thread as a consolidator any non-Canes signings. Canes signings can go in separate threads.
 
You would think that Sekera asking for $6 million per would be insanity, but then you remember Jeff Petry signed for an average value of $5.5 million per and is making $7 million each of the next 2 seasons.

I predict either Justin Williams or Jiri Tlusty ends up in Pittsburgh....

I doubt it ... at least not a first line winger. Semin hadn't really played that role here since the season prior to last anyway. If the Canes go heavy in free agency, which is unlikely anyway, I'd think a first pairing partner for Faulk would take priority over another offensive winger.
 
Ducks lose Francois Beauchemin to Colorado on a 3 year deal. This was the reason the Ducks traded for Kevin Bieksa, they knew they were losing Beauchemin who had told the Ducks he had a 3 year deal at $5 million per already on the table.

Beauchemin's contract is actually for 3 years at an average value of $4.5 million.

Sekera signed with the Oilers for 6 years average value of $5.5 million per. Congrats Sekera, that huge year 2 seasons ago got him paid, big time.
 
Wow, Sekera cashed in for sure.


In other news.. Kessel's going to be in black and gold again, but this time in Pittsburgh.... Kapanen kid part of the package going the other way.

And the board pretty much nailed his open market value when we were discussing his trade at the deadline. $5.5 million is pretty much what we guessed. And while I like him as an all purpose D-man, I'm not sure that money for SIX years is that great a call.

It is for Edmonton. They are starving for defense. Players aren't exactly lining up to go play there, and there will be a renewed buzz (annual event lately) around the hot new prospect.
 
So you have Sekera manning the point on a PP that could conceivably have Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Conner McDavid out there at the same time. How many points is Sekera going to pile up this year?

Wonder if any teams want to hire us as their GM. We're really really good...
