2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

Good idea to try to sell it all for something before it skunks. There is a bigger issue of massive numbers of kegs of beers that are going unused because of the shutdowns. With no one to drink the beer in the kegs, its going to all go bad and have to be dumped eventually as the kegs themselves are expensive and need to be emptied at some point for reuse.

Breweries got hit with a double whammy within a few weeks. They geared up production for the NCAA Tournament and then Brewgaloo beer fest at the end of April. Brewgaloo has been rescheduled for August but Shop Local Raleigh, one of Brewgaloo’s sponsors, had a drive thru event on April 25 with local breweries and cideries. It wasn’t cheap, I paid $73 for 26 bottles/cans of beer and cider, but it went straight to the locals.

There was a story on WTVD yesterday about Lonerider brewery sending their beer to Top of the Hill distillery to be converted to hand sanitizer.

I wish it tasted better than it does...the name and logo might be the best part of that creation sadly.
Yeah ... doubly sad because several other offerings from R&D are actually quite good. So you know they're capable of much better and still produced that cross between "lite beer" and unflavored White Claw. Still, those are Carling Black Label prices, boys.

If you want the good stuff, White St Brewing in Wake Forest is still doing curb pickup. I think Kurtzie is a fan of the Kolsch ... for good reason.

Yep, I've made a good dent in the case of White Street Kolsch I picked up there two weeks ago!

I haven’t had a bad beer from White St. yet. As for RnD, if you like IPAs, their Seven Saturdays is pretty good. Stay away from LoCal Resolution. It’s advertised as low calorie, low carb. I’d add low taste to the mix I haven’t tried any of their other offerings at the arena. Wegmans has a pretty good selection of their beers.

It looks like most of the locals are doing pickup/to go orders...Lonerider, Big Boss, Aviator, Bull City Ciderworks, Compass Rose, etc.

My drive-thru Brewgaloo order was heavy on IPAs. I ordered a 6 pack of IPAs, a 12 pack of mixed beers and 2-4 packs of ciders. What I ended with was 8 ciders, 2 lagers, 1 each of sour, pale ale, imperial stout, and wheat ale and 12 IPAs. So the 12 pack of mixed beers was half IPAs. Don’t get me wrong, I like them. I would have preferred a bigger variety in the 12 pack.

Here is a crazy story about former Everblade/Checkers goalie John Muse. He played 171 games over 5 seasons for the teams. He’s been stranded in Indonesia since February 28. He was playing for Kunlun Red Star in the KHL. They took off for a 5 day road trip to Russia in mid-January. While they were gone, all their remaining home games in Beijing had been cancelled, so they played out the rest of the schedule in other rinks. The club shipped all the players’ belongings to Moscow. Muse took off from Moscow for Bali, leaving his things behind for what was supposed to be a 3 week trip through Southeast Asia and Australia. Indonesia has shut down all air travel until June 1. Russia has closed their borders to foreigners. He jokes that he’s going to be a local by the time he can leave.

You have any recommendations for something other than an IPA from Compass Rose? They're literally right up the street from me.

I am not an IPA guy either.

It's been a while since I've been to Compass Rose, but I recall that they used to have a Belgian Red Ale that I enjoyed. (Of course, right after I typed this and before I posted it, I went to their website and could not find such a brew on their online menu.)

I may give their Scotch Ale a shot. If I take a backpack on my walk I can loop past them some time .

While it ain't the greatest beer, I am perfectly happy to pick up a 24-box for $15 and will be there on Saturday!

You’re not IPA guys because you’re not bitter old men like me. ;)

I actually have never been there. The one time we drove over, they were hosting a wedding reception. I was only noting that they were open. However, looking at their beer selection, they don’t have as wide a range of offerings as I remember, it’s mostly stouts and IPAs with a couple of sours.

I am in fact a bitter old man, and for the record I only like a very specific range of IPAs so it's easier just to avoid them when trying anything new. I don't mind the ones that aren't so hops-forward and sharp that they give you instant acid reflux ... but those are fairly rare in that category. There's a couple of Juicy IPAs I like as well ... particularly something like Mandarina from Highland. And I actually like some sours, but that's another variety I'm definitely sampling before committing.

It's frustrating though, to go to most of these smaller breweries and all they really offer that I'll drink blind is stout. I like stout, for the most part ... but it's not an all situations option.

I’m older though.

Sours and Goses definitely have to be sampled before I leap. I did take a blind leap of faith on a grapefruit gose from Terrapin (I think) while I was walking around Lowe’s (love the beer den. A beer while I’m shopping? Yes, please.) My Brewgaloo assortment came with 2 New England IPAs, Donkey Sauce from Deep River was pretty good, the other is from Raleigh Brewing and I haven’t opened that one yet. Pinky Ring Bling from Southern Range was good too, it’s a hazy IPA. I’ve also been drinking a lot of session IPAs lately, they’re lower in alcohol. Trophy Wife is my go to when I can find it.

If you like sours, Barrel Culture in Durham used to be almost exclusively sours, but the new owners have added some other things. The blueberry lemonade wasn’t bad.
