2019 Free Agency Thread

There have been a couple of reports that indicate that Lou was never going to go anything other than year to year with Lehner. I mean, I kind of get that ... but then again, I don't.

Didn’t he sign a 1 year? Seems reasonable from the teams perspective. No doubt if he stays clean he can play but he has a history and you can’t just assume he’s going to. Heck it adds another risk factor to an already risky deal.

I wasn't signing him to anything.

Or singing him, or anything else!

Yuck yuck.

Habs sign Ben Chiarot 3 x $3.5 per.

Decent pickup. Big upgrade over Benn ... I mean, Chiarot can actually move, so yeah. That's not even terrible money for a solid stay at homer with a little upside. Nice deal.

I'd have preferred a puck mover on the left side but the only one available is Gardiner and with his wonky back it seems teams are staying away.

I've always liked Gardiner but somebody is going to over-pay for that guy and regret it in fairly short order.

As much as I am very happy for Lehner and the progress he's made to manage his demons and the Masterton, I get also get Uncle Lou's approach. Too bad there was not some team kind of option tied into the contract-- evidence of compliance with meds, UDS, etc, we will offer an extension of 1 year and just keep renewing it. Perhaps that's too prescriptive, but sometimes it's what's needed....Anyway, good luck to him in Chicago.

There was a followup article in the Athletic on the Lehner negotiations with the Isles. It's not especially flattering to Lou and the NYI front office, but it did confirm that they offered Lehner a 2-year deal at a lowball $3.5-4 million AAV. Which is only a small step above the contract Mrazek ended up signing in Carolina.

Marcus Johansson to Slugville, 2 years/$9 million. He was coming off a 3 year/$13.75 million deal he signed with the Caps so he took a bit of a salary trim.

Injury hedge, pure and simple. Good pickup for Buffalo IF he can stay healthy.

Still asking for too much for too long, from what I've gathered.

A bad combination. He’s gonna have to come down on both. He hasn’t played 82 games yet and he was invisible down the stretch for the Canes.

I think his season here did him few favors. He pulled himself out of a game on that western road swing when he was medically cleared and never gave a clear reason why he was out. When Niederreitter was brought in, he seemed to take it personally and his numbers went down. He was not a factor in the playoffs that’s for sure. Glad the ship has sailed on him.

Ferland is heading out west-- Vancouver for 4 years at an AAV of $3.5 million for a total of $14 million. Glad he got what he wanted, but buyer beware...It's being finalized now.

In other news, Matt Cullen is has called it a career! Thanks Matt and good luck! We loved you in Carolina!

Wasn't Ferland asking for a ton more than that, at least at some point?

The NHL without Matt Cullen? Is there such a thing?

The rumor was that he was looking for Tom Wilson money, 6 years/$31 million. Adam Gold tweeted that it was 7 years/$49 million. That’s insane and no wonder why the Canes never really negotiated after that. That’s a complete misreading of the team salary structure and his worth. I bet the Canes would have done the contract he ultimately signed.

I think after his disappearance the second half and whatever was going on in the playoffs that the Canes decided to go in a different direction, even at 4 years $14M. I don't think the Canes would do that deal - not now. In December or January I think they would have...
