2021-22-23-24-25 News Thread

The NC Courage fired head coach Sean Nahas last night. The tersely worded statement from the club could lead one to believe it was something other than performance related, although they’re on the outside of the playoffs right now. The timing is also curious; the league came off their 5 week summer break last Saturday, where the team played San Diego to a scoreless draw, and he wasn’t whacked until yesterday. He had missed a few games earlier for health related reasons.

Short version of my thoughts on another board ... if they had wanted to, Courage had all sorts of soccer reasons to part ways with Nahas. The fact that they won't identify that as the issue combined with the timing leads to the conclusion that there's something else going on. Again. I hate it for the players, a lot of whom have been down this road before and have built a strong culture at the club despite the challenges.

Oh also ... maybe now somebody will remember that they have Jaedyn freaking Shaw on the team

The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Crystal Palace’s appeal of their demotion to the Conference League for breach of the Multi-club Ownership rules. Nottingham Forest will take their place in the Europa League.

Forest is owned by Evangelos Marinakos, who also owns Olympiacos, which will also play in the Europa League. However, he placed his shares in Forest in a blind trust, an option not available to Textor’s Palace shares as he was actively selling them.

Yeah, not so sure how Ovalle fits that system but she's a forward who can play all across the front line so they can find a role for her. Orlando are also losing Ally Watt to Denver when they get started, so if nothing else Ovalle is an upgrade on the wing as she's more of a finisher than Watt. I've gotta say, the price tag shocked me a little. She's a tricky little forward, but I've never been all that impressed with her internationally and the quality in the Mexican league is improving but still kind of all over the place. Put it this way, she's no force of nature like Barbra Banda who has been an absolute bargain for $750K.

Big shakeup in the Turkish Super Lig in the last few sprays. On Thursday, Besiktas sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. On Friday, Fenerbahce sacked Jose Mourinho. Solskjaer had only been at Besiktas since January and had won 15 of his 29 matches in charge. It was his first job since getting the sack at Man U in 2021. They finished 8th in the Super Lig last year and were eliminated in the Conference League playoff round. Mourinho had been at Fenerbahce since a June 2024. He won 37 of his 62 matches in charge but had just lost the Champions League playoff round to Benfica. Fenerbahce also hasn’t won the Super Lig since 2014 and fans were voting with their wallets. A match in May only drew 10,000 to their 50,000 seat stadium as fans tired of Mourinho ball.

Well, as we all know ... Mourinho's brand of football is boring as heck if you aren't winning. And Fenerbahce weren't really winning. And it's not like he's cheap. That one I get, even with the questionable timing. Solskjaer, not so much. He didn't even get a full season and that program has been a mess for a while now. Still, it's Turkey so ... you expect some weirdness.

Bayer Leverkusen sacked Erik ten Hag 3 matches into his tenure. They won won a match in the league cup over a 4th tier side reduced to 9 players then lost their Bundesliga opener to Hoffenheim and blew a 2 goal lead against 10 man Werder Bremen and settled for a draw. He had signed a 2 year contract, replacing Xabi Alonso who left for Real Madrid.

Chelsea is apparently closing in on another £1M+ move in women's football, trying to pry Alyssa Thompson from my side, ACFC. The Chelsea forward line is already formidable and adding Alyssa is almost unfair. 😁
As an ACFC supporter, this move would be devastating. I know the club has struggled to find its footing (again). Not sure what they hope to garner from selling Alyssa.

So you missed this yesterday? ;)

The London Coty Lionesses, newly promoted to the WSL, have partnered with Togethxr, a company co-founded by Alex Morgan, Sue Bird, Simone Manuel and Chloe Kim and will feature “Everyone Watches Women’s Sports” on the front of their jerseys. They’re not a sponsor, as is the norm for front of jersey logos, the collaboration is listed as a partnership.

Michele Kang is quite the lightning rod in England. Her approach to getting the Lionesses into the spotlight has basically been chucking money all over the place and she's not making a lot of friends in the WSL.

The broadcast booth will never be the same. Ray Hudson announced his retirement. His last broadcast was the Barcelona-Inter Chanpions League semifinal. He’s 70 years old and said there are “there are private reasons for it in some ways that I’d rather not talk about.”

It was time, honestly. Ray hadn't had the same fizz for a couple of years. I wondered if he was well the last time I heard him on a clips package. He was over the top and kind of ridiculous, but just so full of joy behind the mic.
