2021-22 Season Hurricanes Misc. Thread

This is definitely not shaping up the way the Canes wanted it to. I don't want Freddie Andersen to play 65 games this season, and I'm sure the Canes don't want that either. But if Raanta is out for an extended period of time, you almost have to go with Freddie every game.

Maybe you take a chance with Lyon sprinkled in, but I'm not playing him against Tampa, or Philly or St. Louis. Do you dare play Lyon against Vegas, or Anaheim or LA or San Jose or Seattle? I guess you almost have to put him in there for at least one of those to avoid Freddie hitting 17 games started out of 18?

Get well soon Raanta!

I think you do it sooner rather than later. Like tomorrow or Friday. You have to know if he’s a viable option before you NEED him. Better to lose tomorrow and know he can’t do the job than wait until Andersen’s gassed or hurt and you have to play him. The exception is if you know Ranta will be back this weekend.

Philly isn't an especially high scoring team. That might be a good spot to mix in Lyon just to get his feet wet. I'd rather see that than sending him out against St Louis ... and an on form Tarasenko.

True, but in-division wins are especially important. I’d be more likely to play Lyon outside of the division or—preferably—outside the conference.

First line Jarvis at practice today.

Svech/Aho/Jarvis
KK/Trocheck/Turbo
Lorentz/Staal/random
Marty/Stepan/Leivo

Necas and Fast were both not feeling well and tested negative for Covid. Raanta, Pesce and Nino all skated before practice.

Lyon was sent back to Chicago, so either Raanta is ready or they’re banking a few days cap savings.

Funny little side note about Raanta…he and his wife bought a house on the same block where a friend of mine lives. I saw this friend at a party last night and she told me the previous owner of the house was…Petr Mrazek!

That has ended up happening a fair amount over the years. I remember a period when a house over In Cary got passed between three consecutive Hurricanes.

I think at one point Gleason rented Ray Whitney’s old house in North Raleigh.

Yeah, the idea of players renting from one another makes perfect sense. The fact that Mrazek sold this house directly to Raanta (for about $1.4 million, by the way) struck me as funny.

There is no banking cap space when you are using LTIR and are above your ACSL (which the Canes are). You can save a few thousand bucks in real cash but that hardly seems worth it here.

I would say Raanta is most likely ready to go.

Nino back at practice today and back on PP2, Jarvis stayed on PP2 and KK was taken off. So maybe we’re done with Leivo, but KK will probably be a permanent fixture on the 4th line. It's where he finished the game on Saturday, with Martinook swapping places with him. Fast didn’t practice but apparently Necas did. Pesce was in a yellow jersey.

To the delight of Montreal fans everywhere, once everyone is healthy, KK seems the mostly likely candidate to find himself a healthy scratch with Jarvis taking his lineup spot in our top 12.

That would be an appropriate move given that KK almost never seems to be making any sort of difference out there no matter what the situation. He's invisible most of the time, the only times he hasn't been being the 2 goals he scored (neither of which were high skill) and the defensive lapses he has had. Meanwhile Seth Jarvis is engaged and dangerous almost every shift no matter who he is playing with.

Maybe KK turns things around, maybe he doesn't. But if we have our full set of forwards, KK absolutely deserves to be the 13th forward and in the press box. I expect that is exactly what Rod will do and that no one in the Canes management will interfere when he does.

IF you are thinking ahead to KK's future fate, at least from what I've seen so far, I might be inclined to suggest the Canes best move going forward with KK might be to not qualify him and let him walk. Yeah that would really sting given the draft picks given up and the Canes would have egg on their face, but the last thing the Canes should do is double down on KK given how useless he looks out there. If he wants to stay here for 1 year at $1.5 million, then fine, but yeah, so far, not good, not good at all.

Definitely don't go signing KK to a multi year, $3+ million extension please unless he shows something much better than what he has so far. And first chance we have with Nino, Fast and Necas all back, get KK out of the lineup please.

KK also provided a critical net front presence on 2 goals. Other than that? A whole lot of meh, and that’s generous.
