2023 Draft and UFA Thread

That's because the Countian fanbase cares more about qualifying for the playoffs more than they care about winning in the playoffs.

Fortunately we now have a "fuck the fans" front office.
making the playoffs does not necessarily require putting 18 year olds in the NHL, in fact, when Bettman fixes the lottery so we get Bedard next week, I want him returned to Regina by rote for 2 years and then 2 years in the AHL to learn to play defence, then, maybe then, he can play on the 4th line for us...

Athletic asked scouts how Bedard ranks as a prospect with other #1 picks at the time of their draft.

They went back 10 years and Bedard ranks 2nd, in between McDavid and Matthews

Juraj Slafkovsky, of course, ranks dead last in 10th spot

of course he does...

we tanked the year there was no clear cut #1...Shane Wright was supposed to be that guy but disappointed during his draft year, and Slaf was just one of many #1B options

Ya
Slaf would probably not crack the top 10 this year.

Doesn't mean he won't be useful but we sucked the wrong year...again.

Shane Wright, and this is with hindsight, looks more and more like one of those "weight bullies". Players who look awesome simply because they're bigger and more physically dominant over younger players.

But as the advantage diminishes and he doesn't have that advantage anymore, he doesn't seem to be nearly as good. Happens all the time, just not with players who are seen as "generational", a term that is far too loosely thrown around.

Disagree. I think he'd be in the 6-10 range. And we sucked this year too, that's why we finished 28th overall and will have a high pick regardless of how we fare in the draft lottery.

I think Slaf would get picked around 7th or 8th.

Slaf is a more interesting prospect than Ryan Leonard, Oliver Moore, Eduard Sale, etc.

I'm not greedy. I'm willing to settle for the 2OA and get Fantilli. And I think that while Slaf isn't going to be generational he can still become an elite forward.

If we wind up stuck with pick #5, 6, or 7, we should trade it for a Dach-like return or package it somehow to land a really good young player who's further ahead in his development.

I'd put him in that group. And I think some of that group is also not top 10.

imo (based on what I've read) there seems to be a clear top 5 and then a bunch of very good from 5 to almost 20

If we end up with the 7th and 17th pick it would not shock me if the 17th pick was better

Glass and Suzuki style

Did not suck enough.
If our team wasn't ravaged by injuries - and I'm not including Price & Byron - we would have finished much higher than we did. It's a blessing, in a weird way.

Our roster, compared to Chicago/Anaheim/Columbus/San Jose, isn't all that bad. It's just not great by any means either.

Apparently Slafkovsky was (partly) picked because they knew this year’s crop was on the smaller side (apart from Fantilli). I guess they expected to get a better smallish player in 23 than 22 and thus opted for size.

I'm greedy. I want last place.

I'm not that interested it rebuilding what we had during the max pac years. I'm old as shit and have never seen a truly elite forward play for the Habs.
