2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

We spent a fair amount of time earlier this season discussing the possibility that we bring Freddie back given how crummy and high priced some other options are.

We didn't touch on the fact that since Freddie is 35+, that gives us the option of using incentives to keep the base salary lower while rewarding Freddie with extra if he can manage to stay healthy and/or plays well in the playoffs.

Freddie has reached the 35 game mark just once in his 4 seasons with the Canes (52 games in 01-02).

As we discussed, there will be a lot of fans who just flat out hate this, especially if "playoff Freddie" shows up again during this run. I would remind them that this signing doesn't necessarily finalize the Canes goaltending plans for next season. We have no idea at this point if the plan is to run Freddie AND Kochetkov back. The Canes might not even know if that is the plan yet.

The scarcity at the position in the UFA market this summer likely made this an easy decision. Maybe Koochie will be dealt or maybe they sign a third who could push Koochie for the platoon with Freddy but I don’t mind the extension.

Ryan Henkel asked some of the guys who helped them the most when they were rookies trying to break into the league. Poor Jalen Chatfield broke in during the Covid season and really didn’t have anyone. And Jarvis’ answer was a little surprising, he said Derek Stepan was one of the guys that started chirping at him and then others joined in.

I enjoyed that thanks for posting it

Great article! I think Brindy's time with Hull may have been hugely influential on how he treats the young players these days:
Hully [Brett Hull] just yelled at you and made you feel bad. But then would take you out and laugh and be like, ‘What are you talking about?’ He was a great personality and you learned a lot from him too just by the way he played. But he was an interesting guy.”

Yeah, I remember how they stapled Jarvis to Stepan early on and how quickly the kid outgrew that role on the ice during the early part of his rookie season. It reminded me of how they kept Svech with Martinook for most of his rookie year, and how Blake started the season attached to Drury. Brindy is really intentional about how he deals with young players in the way they learn their job during games and not just away from the rink, which is one reason he resonates with the players.

This is good business, honestly. Freddie takes basically the same contract into next year if he hits his incentives, two thirds of which are availability-related. Again, now either go turn Kochetkov into a different platoon partner or sign a better third option.
I actually would not mind a better third option than Spencer Freaking Martin that could push Kooch next year. Is someone like a Alex Lyon or Ilya Samsonov or even Ville Husso willing to sign on the cheap to try and pry the job away from Kooch? It has to be a reliable enough third that you are not afraid to play him in a regular platoon role at the NHL level and you could never say that about Spencer Martin...

Today’s practice lines. I think there are too many skaters…

Svechnikov - Aho - Blake
Hall - Kotkaniemi - Stankoven - Roslovic
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Robinson - Jankowski - Carrier - Jost

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker
Nikishin - Morrow

Andersen | Kochetkov

I like the 4-2 lines + goalie. Not sure the NHL would

The Canes have all of $4.75 in base contract money tied up in their goaltending battery ... TOTAL. That's less than 90% of the decent starters make on their own. They've got plenty of budget to go pay for a 3rd guy and not go dumpster diving ... again.
