2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Well, it dropped.

2 home games to kick things off ... NJ (predictable) and Philly

Then, immediately hit the road for a 6 game tour of the western conference. The Cali trip followed by Vegas, Colorado and Dallas.

Back home for a game with ... yup, Vegas. Finishing off that season series in October. Fun. It's November before we get back to back sets, but draw a "fun" home back to backer with Edmonton and Vancouver for no particular reason.

FOUR sets of back to backs in December, three in January and March and one more to finish the season in April. Total of 13, which means 26 of the 82 games will be in back to back sets. 31%. Quality, schmality.

So you get Vegas, Colorado, Dallas in a row on the road and come home to Vegas...wow, just wow. Nothing like slaying the big boys early and often...

We start with 2 home games, 10/9 and 10/11 against the Devils and Flyers. Then on the road for the State Fair roadie, 10/14 - 25 against San Jose, Anaheim, LA, Vegas, Colorado and Dallas. We have an unheard of 7 game homestand from 11/26 - 12/9. A New Year’s Day home game against Montreal. January and March are packed due to the Olympic break, 15 games in January and March with 9 at home in January and 10 on the road in March. We close with 15 of the last 23 on the road, including the last 4 which feature games at Chicago, Utah, Flyers and Islanders, the last 2 back to back. There are 15 back to backs, we’re home for both halves for 2 of them. We have an old fashioned home and home with the Flyers on 12/13-14, the Florida double on 12/19-20 and the Alberta double on 3/6-7, which concludes the 2nd west coast roadie with Seattle and Vancouver before Edmonton and Calgary.

True but the quality of the first game of a back to back is not compromised to any significant extent is it?

That’s rough. Could easily drop all of those and be off to a terrible start. Never be able to make that up in the power rankings.😁

That’s a sucky schedule out of the gate.

I mean, the quality of opponent is all over the place even in the most even handed of schedules. If you're serious about contending then there's nothing better as a limus test than a run of tough ones. That doesn't bother me at all. I'd also vastly prefer a front loaded schedule to a back loaded one. You're more likely to be healthy for one thing.

The Hurricanes have seven weeks of 4 games in seven days along with 12 back to back games. Not loving the Olympic break. The guys who don't make their Olympic teams will get a nice break, but it's gonna be a grind on either side of the Olympic Games. The star players will get more wear & tear, while the rank & file guys will get some rest. It's always a crap shoot after the Olympics to see which team has chemistry and who doesn't for the run to the Cup.

Yeah, it just looks like a schedule for a season with a large break, kind of like last season was compressed because of 4 Nations. And having two US players suffer relatively serious injuries during 4 Nations last season will certainly remind teams of the stakes for these things. Overall it's good for the players and the league to be involved in these international events but everything has consequences

The Canes made some hockey operations changes. The most visible to us is that Jorge Alves was promoted to head equipment manager. Bob Gorman is still with the team but in a reduced capacity as he heads toward retirement in the near future. Daniel Bochner was promoted to a full time development coach and will relocate to the US.

Mike and Tripp finished 22nd in The Athletic’s fan survey of NHL broadcasts. They were 18th last year. Mike either can’t control or chooses not to control Tripp’s inanities. And he’s still not calling all the action, seconds behind the play. Worst of all, the radio simulcast is unlistenable.

The Red Wings were 1st, the Kraken were 2nd. I guess that Olzcyk is better locally than he is nationally because he’s brutal on TNT, even when he’s not doing Canes games. The Bruins, even with Jack Edwards retired, were last. Again.

It’s hilarious you guys think Tripp is the problem. Tripp is a Hall of Famer compared to Maniscalco. Not only is he terrible at play by play he still looks like a guy being interviewed for the first time on local TV after the neighborhood raccoon was caught on camera stealing leftover hoagies from his garbage can. It makes me so uncomfortable seeing him and hearing him on TV. I’ve listened to Tripp for 100 years now and he is nowhere near the garbage you guys think he is. His partner on the other hand…

He’s not the only problem but he’s increasingly part of it. When he wants to analyze the game he’s good at it. But there is too much banality, too much talking over the action, not enough analysis or play by play from his partner. Maniscalco can’t rein him in like Forslund did, but Tripp should know better and recognize that his job is to analyze, not provide comic relief. And the “huge Caniac“ shtick is long past its sell by date.

I guess I'm thankful they're not the the Washington boofers, which is a hell of a way to count your victories, if you can call it that.

You get what you pay for & Tom Dundon should recognize that. We had the best (IMHO) TV and radio play by play guys in the League when Dundon took over. He decided to go with a cheaper product and we're still paying the price. He obviously doesn't value the quality of the on air broadcast content, because if he did, we wouldn't STILL be talking about this. Maniscalco has improved, but still has a ways to go.

Given what they spend, 22nd in the NHL is probably an accurate return on investment. Plus, that poll is so freaking subjective that you can't take it seriously. Yes, it sucks that they let Chuck and John go. It was a long time ago now, and the current broadcast is ... OK. There are worse in the NHL ... much worse.

FWIW, these are the teams ranked lower than the Canes, from 23rd to DFL.

Calgary, Anaheim, New Jersey, Chicago, Minnesota, Buffalo, Nashville, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Boston. A lot of “traditional” hockey markets on that list.

As much as I liked John Forslund and Chuck Kaiton, the focus on and success in building a consistent winning hockey club has me less worried about our current average to below average broadcast crew. Ask a Kraken fan if they would trade John Forslund for the Canes last 7 seasons and current situation.

Not saying we couldn't have had both the winning and the A+ TV and Radio crew, just saying that it's easier not to care about broadcasting crews when your team is good (at least for me it is).

I will say our broadcast is very consistent from game to game. Some might say consistently mediocre, but I've grown to enjoy it. I was especially grateful to be able to sync up the internet radio broadcast with the playoff tv feed this past season to avoid the national coverage which is usually insufferably negative on the Canes and a real buzzkill.

Tripp has come a long way from his constant food and groin injury references, and offers occasional good game analysis these days. Maniscalco is so-so, but he also had to replace a hall of fame announcer in Forslund - so the difference is a bit more pronounced. I really like Shane's contributions and wish they would find more ways to use him, and Hannah has been a great improvement over what we've had in the past. The best part for me is that they all seem to like one another and share a welcoming camaraderie. They may not be collectively the best in the league, but I personally feel they're much higher than 22nd.
