2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

I had Rantanen on my fantasy hockey team for a couple of years. I had big expectations and found him to be an average player. However, once MacKinnon got going, Rantanen took off. My impression was that he needed a strong supporting cast as his “brilliance” was tied to others. Given his struggles in Carolina and his average numbers in Dallas, I’m back to thinking he is going to need a good supporting cast or he’ll have work a lot harder than he’s used to for that contract.

That LA/Edmonton game was nuts. LA up four goals and Edmonton comes back to tie it at 4. Edmonton tied it up again at 5 with the extra attacker and then LA scores 46 seconds later with only 55 seconds left in the 3rd to win it. Crazy

And I Got To heat Leah Hextall say ‘Knuckle F***” when she was trying to say ‘Knuckle Puck” 🤣

LA up 1-0

Buccigross getting salty about the RSNs having rights to first round playoff games. He thinks ESPN/TNT should have exclusivity for all 4 playoff rounds. The new NBA contract with Amazon, NBC and ESPN has that exclusivity.

The only way they can cover that many games is remote broadcasts from Bristol and Atlanta. And remote broadcasts suck. Plus that means being subjected to the suckage of Subban, Messier and Biz for 1 more round.

That wasn't icing. Caps got calls like that all night. High sticks let go. Phantom icings. They were interfering everywhere hitting players without the puck. Was pretty gross.
It was bad but the missed call when Carlson got tripped and the Caps would’ve had a 5 on 3 was laughable too. But the Caps 2d goal should’ve been waived off on a high stick too. Dave Jackson is … well … Dave Jackson

Looked to me the in the 3d the Habs finally figured out that they’re younger and faster than the Caps. Game 2 should be interesting..

Our old pal, John Forslund has been doing the remote broadcasts. He’s been pretty vocal on Twitter about it as well. I haven’t talked to him in a while. I might reach out. He is one of the most genuine and nicest guy you’ll ever meet. It really pissed me off when they forced him out.

I still don’t understand how a 900 year-old dinosaur is always so wide open. And it’s not just the Montreal games. He does to the hurricanes (and the rest of the league) even more so. The guy is slower than dirt but somehow he’s always wide open 95% of the time he’s on the ice. It blows my mind.

BTW ... word out of Seattle is that Francis will remain but be reassigned to President while Assistant GM Jason Botterill will move up to GM. That's the same Jason Botterill who completely embarrassed himself as GM of the Sabres before being plucked off the trash heap by Francis when he was staffing the Kraken front office. I dunno guys, but it looks a lot like the Kraken owners don't really know what they're doing ... like at all.

Honestly, it's a testament to Ovechkin's rare ability to find space. And yeah, it ends up being the same general area on the ice, but it's not by accident. Stamkos did the same thing in Tampa, after all. It's not like teams don't want to shut him down, it's that it's not as easy as it looks when the player in question is really, really good at finding not just the space to shoot, but a lane as well. It's the same reason Crosby always seems to be alone on the back post, that Gretzky could always get the puck behind the net with no pressure and that Ray Bourque's point shots always seemed to get through traffic. Some guys manipulate space better than others. Those guys generally end up in the Hall of Fame.

I'm ok with anything that keeps me from having to use that piece of crap FanDuel app.

This is the difference between an overpaid floater with a great shot like Patrick Laine and the greatest goalscorer in NHL history.

Ovechkin might look like he is basically standing around doing nothing for stretches, but he actually works to get to the spots where he can score goals. It's not an accident that the puck always seems to find Ovechkin in prime scoring areas, he knows where those areas are and how and when to get to them. When you couple that elite ability to 'get open' with a lethal slap and wrist shot, both of which can be placed with pinpoint accuracy, you get the greatest goalscorer ever. Is he slower than ever? Yes. But he still knows how to get to the right spots at the right time and is willing to work to do so.

When you couple a nice slapshot with a lazy half-ass effort to get to prime scoring areas you get Patrick Laine.

we just can’t sacrifice a round where these big markets can watch on their regional sports network, whether it’s Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, New York especially.

The general standings suckage in those cities took care of that one for ya Bucci -- no RSN to get in the way when the team is golfing.... and ya I'd be a little more sympathetic if you guys were better at your job. I like the Booch doing college games, I don't know if it's a style thing or he knows that game better, or what, but it's night and day to me when he does NCAA vs. NHL... and he really belongs in the studio, NHL 2Night style.

And this remote studio setup stinks to high heaven. Broadcast teams belong in the arena, barring weather or other last-minute emergency it's fine to have the capability to go remote rather than dark.

Oh, most of Ovechkin's "standing around" is tactical. And almost none of it is laziness, although he does coast back in transition now that he's ancient. But in the offensive zone, when he's standing around it's usually because he's either already in the right place or he's waiting for a seam to go get in the right place.

Yeah, he belongs in the studio except when he’s covering “cawlidge hawckey”. It’s a completely different experience, listening to him call the Frozen Four and a NHL game.
