2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Unless we hear otherwise, I'm going to assume that Mike Sullivan wasn't fighting to stay. Things are not going to be great in Pittsburgh in the near future and I suspect Sullivan sees that clearly.

Mike Sullivan is going to be able to find a much better head coaching opportunity elsewhere. This timing seems right for both sides.
Sullivan to the Rangers has to be a slam dunk in the next day or three...

Yeah, it was time. Sullivan still can coach a team, but he needs a specific mix of players to get his systems to work ... or else he needs the right kind of support for Crosby to let him take over games. He's got neither and the Pens have so many roster restrictions because of their legacy player contracts that it's just impossible to bridge the gap. He'll get another bench sooner or later, for sure

Oh lord, Lavi incoming as the replacement?
Lavi would be smart to take a break until midseason opportunities open up next year. I can't imagine him being a good fit for any of the current (or likely) openings but he could do what McLellan did in Detroit this year and jump in to stabilize somebody else's mess.

Do we know how good of a coach he is? He’s not going to have Crosby and Malkin wherever he goes. Since winning back to back Cups, he’s never gotten out of the 2nd round and has missed the playoffs the last 3 years. He wasn’t that good with the Bruins either, losing in the first round his first year and missing the playoffs the 2nd year.

Vezina Trophy finalists: Connor Hellebuyck, Darcy Kuemper, Andrei Vasilevskiy. Hellebuyck has won it twice and is a 5 time finalist, including the last 3 years. Vasilevskiy is also a 5 time finalist and has won it once. Kuemper is a first time finalist.

Hellebuyck is gonna win by a country mile, but is having another rough go of it in the playoffs

Well Tampa Bay just shit the bed in a major way

Up 2-1 with 3 minutes left and gave up 2 goals in 11 seconds then the empty netter. They done. Razors edge to either be tied at 2-2 or down 3-1. Crazy stuff

For the record, I entered just one single NHL playoff bracket...just the NHL.com Bracket challenge. I have the Avs beating Tampa in the Cup Finals.

To me it looked like Ekblad got Hagel in the shoulder and maybe the neck and it wasn’t that forceful (for hockey… if I were walking down the street and someone did that to me it’d be considered criminally forceful). Then Ekblad pushed Hagel down pretty forcefully and Hagel may have hit his head on the ice. The puck was there and a player is allowed to push another player off the puck. But everyone (except maybe the NHL) says it’s a no-doubt suspension. What am I not seeing? I’m not trying to be contrarian or disrespect Hagel. Some say the forearm was to the jaw. Ok, that would be contact to the head and hits to the jaw are an elevated concussion risk. That would be a suspendable offense for sure. That may have occurred but i didn't actually see that. What am I missing that everyone else is seeing?

Mikkola’s hit? Vulnerable position, direct to the head, completely avoidable. Textbook suspension.
