2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

I wonder if they couldn't have gotten him signed a bit cheaper if they hadn't traded their leverage (aka Gibson) away first.

Gabe Vilardi and the Jets avoid arbitration, he signed for 6 years, $7.5 million AAV. That’s more than double the expired contract he signed with the Kings in 2023.

Elliotte Friedman says another player is going the CHL to NCAA route. Porter Martone, taken 6th overall this year, is headed to Michigan State. He had 98 points in 57 games for OHL Brampton, following 71 points in 60 games the year before.

That's good value on Kakko, especially if he improves even more on his increased production rate in Seattle. That said, it does take him to free agency at 27, so ... yeah. That's the price for three high value years.

Hart? Nearly immediately, given the dearth of goalie options. Foote? I don't know. Honestly, he kind of sucks. Some GM somewhere will convince himself he needs McLeod on his fourth line, even though he also sort of sucks.

It's actually kind of surprising how quickly his outsized contract became so toxic. I figured it would be at least a few more seasons before this happened. Oh well.

From what I've read on the London guys, the NHL is trying to say they're not eligible to sign yet. Under the CBA, shy of new charges or an appeal pending, I'm not sure the NHL has the right to make that declaration. The PA certainly doesn't think so. It'll be interesting if somebody pushes the issue by signing one of those guys and then submitting the contract to the league for registration. There's no rush for that bunch other than Hart, I'd think, but there are any number of teams who would be better with Hart in their goalie rotation.

It wasn't that quick. He's going into year 5 of a 7 year deal and he's been good for them, if injury prone. Dougie isn't exactly a fitness fanatic so he was never a guy that was going to age well, thus the second half of that contract term was always going to be a mess. That said, you'd have thought the Devils would have gotten more than one full season of Dougie free of injury and producing big numbers. Easy to forget, but he DID post his career year for the Devs in 22-23. They just would have liked a few more like that one before they got to this stage.

Hart to Edmonton has seemed inevitable for a while now. We will see...
I’m not suggesting this based on the optics it would send to the Canes fan base nor am I saying it would happen, but isn’t Carter Hart a better long term option in goal for the Canes than anything else they have here now and in the pipeline? The entire situation with all those guys is messy and delicate on several levels but Hart isn’t that far removed from being a pretty steady starter in this league that just happened to play on some really bad teams and defense groups in Philly.

Respect your right to have that opinion. But after the Duke Lacrosse I learned to withhold judgement until all the facts were in. I don't know all the facts in this case. But it seems as though the judge thought they were pretty clear cut.

I doubt that this gets resolved in time for this season. First, unlike the US, the Crown can appeal an acquittal. They have 30 days to do so and the Crown Attorney said they’ll weigh their options. If it does get appealed, there is no way the league will reinstate them while that is ongoing.

Second, and I’m copying this from The Athletic

The collective bargaining agreement affords NHL commissioner Gary Bettman considerable power to punish players for off-ice conduct deemed harmful to the league. That includes actions that don’t result in criminal convictions. Article 18-A grants Bettman the ability to expel, suspend, fine or even cancel the contracts of players following a league investigation and hearing (where the player and NHL Players’ Association are permitted to present evidence, testimony and argument in the player’s defense).

The existence of the text messages, even though they were excluded from evidence in the trial, are problematic for the players.

Also keep in mind that Slava Voynov was suspended for 1 year after his original conviction was dismissed by a judge. The PA appealed but the arbitrator upheld the suspension.

I agree with polar. There was Plenty of evidence to prove they are scumbugs with terrible character. Not the kind of people I want anywhere near here. You don’t have to be guilty of a crime to be a terrible human being with character issues
