2024 NHL Draft

In some years and some drafts I would always favor keeping the pick...but this year the real good stuff appears to be in the top 10-15 picks and then who knows...at 27th overall, maybe trade the pick for an NHL ready guy that can play now or perhaps one of their favorite exercises of turning that late first rounder into two second rounders or a second and third to maximize their picks.

FWIW, Scott Wheeler at The Athletic has a pretty good handle on Carolina's scouting priorities and he's got the Canes taking center Egor Surin out of the KHL. He also mentions Hemming, Parascak, Wallenius and Mews as likely possibilities. He also mentions Carolina as the floor for winger Trevor Connelly, who some scouts see slipping. The Canes do love a guy who slips to just the right spot. I'm guessing they're looking for help at center in general and perhaps size as a low key priority after years of ignoring it, although that doesn't always play out in the first round, given the history.

I dunno. Between the possibility of Necas getting moved for a package that includes picks and the need to improve/replace on the big club, I think there's a decent shot at Tulsky moving a 1st rounder. Plus, the gap between the late first guys and the second round guys isn't that big this year. So if their first pick is in the 2nd round I doubt the scouts will feel shortchanged.

Forgot that ESPN has the draft coverage this year and I made the mistake of looking at the coverage team. Can somebody steer me to a pirated feed of the Canadian broadcast? Please?

Is there really any doubt at all that we are going to draft Igor Chernyshov with that 34th overall pick?

Maybe so ... I know one thing. Nobody took anything from 27 to 32 that Carolina is going to lose sleep over. So, thanks to Chicago for the extra picks. Considering how much Carolina loves a 2nd rounder, there must have been real celebration when the Hawks offered them TWO of them to move back ... what? 7 spots?

So yeah, Chernyshov ticks a lot of boxes. Center, right shot, good skill, good size. I expect that first pick to be a center, so why not him. From there Yorke's happy band of elves will start taking their swings. Should be interesting if nothing else.

On Necas not being moved ... I'm a little disappointed but not all that surprised. The press LOVES a player trade on draft night, but that leads to them bigging up rumors that give them what they want, just like they do during trade deadline week. So a lot of the noise turned to be white noise. Apparently it was Columbus that Carolina was reported to be close to a deal with, but I thought the 4th pick was WAY too much to throw away on somebody as mercurial as Necas. And the Ducks taking a flier on Sennecke dropped the second best center in the draft in their laps. No brainer for Donny Waddell.

Without a 1st as a starting point for Necas, we're probably in for the long haul on that situation. And look, Carolina 100% shouldn't tone down their asking price. No freaking way. You want that kind of player, you pay the toll. Period. If not, then they'll qualify him and see if little Marty wants to play chicken.

Chernyshov went 1st today at #33.
Here's our first pick; we're up again soon at #50 and #60

Right-handed defenseman Dominik Badinka has had quite a developmental journey in the last few years, physically speaking. Three seasons ago, he was playing in Czechia. One year later, he ended up playing for Jokerit in Finland, and in his 18-year-old season, he moved to Sweden to play in the J20 Nationell and eventually the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). He bounced between the two leagues, eventually playing almost double (33) the number of games in the SHL than the J20 Nationell (17). In those 17 J20 games, he put up two goals and 11 assists for a total of 13 points, and in the SHL he compiled one goal and four total points.

Despite not putting up huge numbers against men in the SHL, Badinka played around 15 minutes per night on the back end for the Malmö Redhawks, an accomplishment in and of itself for his age. He was awarded this playing time for a few key facets of his game: his mobility, poise, and IQ. At 6-foot-3, Badinka has good size but still moves exceptionally well. His straight-line speed is among the best among defensemen in the entire draft class, though admittedly that can be canceled out by a lack of high-end stickhandling ability. On top of that, he is able to remain extremely calm under pressure in his own end, refraining from panicking with the puck on his stick — which is fantastic considering how often he likes it on his stick.

In addition to that, his hockey sense is top-notch. He sees the ice extremely well, aiding in his first pass up the ice. In the offensive zone, his vision allows him to find open teammates and set up scoring chances at will, while his ability to draw attention to himself allows his teammates to find open space that much easier. On the other end of transition, he is able to read plays and opposing breakouts extremely well, solidifying his two-way abilities as projectably above NHL average.

Canes take a tall, skinny defensemam with their first pick this year.
6'3" 185 at age 18? I mean, that's not chunky or anything but he's not a coat rack. They took the coat rack later. That 17 year old kid only goes 150-something. Plus, Carolina took a pretty diverse group physically ... a couple of beefy dudes, some slendermen, a shorty. They went with a lot of Russians again, but otherwise in terms or tools and makeup this group is all over the place. Which is fine.

BTW, the only surprise for me so far is that the overall focus seemed to have been on D rather than centers. And this is a year a lot of other clubs leaned center. Carolina must not have seen what they wanted at what is clearly a positional of organizational need. Then again, bigger/taller D is also an issue and they hit that pretty hard.

Did we trade with Vegas for Connely? There's a Canes FB account (not The Canes ) that posted about him, and sparked off an entire discussion about whether Brindy could control him and his off ice troubles, welcoming posts from fans, etc. It's like Twilight Zone. They don't realize Vegas took him.
