2025-26 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

North Carolina had a shot to buy part of the Carolina Hurricanes. It passed.

The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan was the majority owner of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment from 2003-12

I get why NC passed, as States tend to keep their investments quite traditional since they face a lot other public scrutiny. But you can’t say that their investment in the Leafs hurt the Ontario Teachers Pension. IIRC they made out like bandits on their position when Bell/Rogers bought them out.

Just checked, they cashed out at 1.29 billion Loonies.

Wait. I thought he died years ago. I thought he got sick. I’m going crazy I guess. RIP. He was ‘interesting’ to say the least and quite the ‘influence’ on Jeff O’Neill and Bates.
The pre-game video with ”In this room…Make them hear you” (which also appeared on1 of the rally towels) is an homage to Chopper. He used to host intermission from the ice and reminded us that “They can hear you in the locker room”.

He and his entourage sat about 10 rows up in 117 on the aisle with 116. We were in the 5th row on the other aisle. I didn’t know who he was until I saw Forslund personally deliver his STM ticket book during a pre season game.

Which is a drop in the bucket compared their current assets north of $270 billion.

It's amazing how many people I hear on a daily basis, here in Raleigh, say they won't pull for the Canes. Refuse to, because they grew up as fans of some northeastern team and hated the Whalers, or still pledge their allegiance to the Bruins, Isles, Devils, etc. Always makes me wonder exactly how big this market could be.

I was a pretty big Red Wings fan until a certain Pivotal Global Event(tm) occurred in June of 2002. The sticker on my truck came off to leave only the Hurricanes sticker. But then again, I didn't grow up on hockey. We didn't get Red Wings games on our TVs up north like we did with Lions and Tigers games. At that the time of my youth, hockey was a rich kid's sport and even then, you had to drive all the way to Traverse City to get involved in any organized youth hockey.

I know him I worked with the team then and he was in the locker room pregame every single game with an entourage and his ankle length leather coat. I just thought j he died years ago

True, but I remember reading that their ROI was something like 15% annually, which is bonkers in the buttoned down world of institutional investment. It was a diversity play and it’s easier to pull off in Canada with THE name brand sports team. If a public institutional fund in NC had a chance to invest in the Panthers, it would be much more difficult to defend passing on the opportunity … for example.

Yeah, I still run into those people, but less and less over time. Aside from the Pittsburgh fans. Their whole personalities are black and gold.

I work with a bunch of them. Everyone's at work talking about watching the Finals and these wet rags are poo pooing all over the conversation with "I will never root for the Canes because....".
