2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Trocheck is week to week for the Rangers and they don’t have enough cap space to call anyone up from Hartford unless they put him on LTIR.
That seemed improbable, but all their decent young guys in the A are on inflated deals and they don't have any of those cheap minor league veteran types making $750K. If they did, they could wedge somebody in.

Another young defenseman has signed a long term extension, only this time he's actually proven the concept so it's not just based on promise. Lane Hudson, current Calder trophy holder, signed an 8 year deal with the Canadiens at an $8.85 million AAV. If his curve is even average, that's a bargain basement deal in less than 3 years ... while still sounding like an awful lot of money. The idea that he'll be locked in for less than Jackson freaking LaCombe is bonkers.

This is tough one...I usually am against the extreme high dollar contracts without enough of a long term runway for a player to show his worth but this guy is super skilled and talented and that number in the new cap world seems low. In a couple years if he continues to be elite, something in the $10.5 to $11 m range seems more in line for this player. It seems like Hutson may have left a few million dollars on the table every year in about a year or two and beyond.

Where are Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar's salaries going to end up when they are eligible to sign extensions July 1, 2026? Will both be willing to take far less than actual value to make more money available for their team to deploy?

Cale Makar is easily worth $15+ million in the open market. There are other really good offensive Dmen around, but Makar is way beyond any of them. The Devils will be sure to keep enough powder dry to pay Quinn Hughes the $12+ million can demand.

Another question to ponder....who will become the first Hurricane to get an 8 digit AAV? I would put the betting odds favorite as a player not anywhere on the Canes current roster or prospect pool, with Nikishin, Jarvis, and Aho the favorites on the current roster.

Makar is the one contract that I want to see done...and I think the number you threw out CMal is inline with what the open market would value him at.

The Cap is going up now that the artificial brakes from the Covid days are off. And that means the higher end of the salary scale will be going up. 1st line centers, high end scoring wingers and high scoring defensemen are the unicorns of the player pool, so they'll be getting MUCH bigger contracts. Everybody needs to adjust their reactions to dollar amounts accordingly. A sub-9 million AAV on a long term deal for a young player with legit Norris potential? That's a bargain on par to Slavin's previous deal ... or MacKinnon's current one. And yeah, Q Hughes and Makar are going to get a LOT more than that because they're already at that level.

The good news for the Avs is that the cap will be $18 million higher in 2027-28 than it is now. But they only have 9 players signed for 27-28, 8 of whom have movement and/or trade protection, and less than $60 million in cap space. Some of that will be eaten up by Necas, should they sign him. They’re going to have to tap dance through a minefield.

Yup ... mostly because they drafted two generational talents. Whoa is them ...

Players are increasingly getting smarter about getting their money in the hands of their financial planners in as much of a lump sum as possible.
