2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Winnipeg signed Kyle Connor to an 8 year extension/$12 million AAV.
And immediately the hockey press starts whinging because that's another guy who won't be in the fantasy free agent summer of 2026 that they've been dreaming up since the last free agent crop fizzled on them.

Note that Connor will be 29 when that extension kicks in and that the Winnipeg tax is still a thing. He's a solid first liner, but he's topped 90 points twice and only exceeded a point per game pace one other time in his career. That's maybe 20% higher than it probably should be considering his age, size and production but if you're the Jets you don't have a ton of options. Especially after letting Ehlers walk. First liners do not, it turns out, grow on trees.

Here is the breakdown on Connor’s salary and bonus per PuckPedia.

Yr 1 - 3: $7.5M Salary, $7.5M Signing Bonus
Yr 4: $6M/$6M
Yr 5: $7M/$2M
Yr 6: $6M/$6M
Yr 7: $4.5M/$4.5M
Yr 8: $9M

Necas might end up the best UFA available if he refuses to sign with anyone before July 1 2026
I 100% expect him to be this year's prize UFA ... and I think he's 100% looking forward to it. Just like virtually every other year almost all the other guys are going to extend with their existing teams.

Good on him for scoring two last night. How long will he hold himself out of the market? I'd like to see him do well, but something inside me wants to see him jump at the money and end up on a non contender or broken team.

Panarin
Necas
Kempe
Tuch
Schmaltz
Bjorkstrand
Anders Lee
Laine

The top of the 2026 UFA available forward list is suddenly not anywhere near as exciting as it was 2 weeks ago.

And out of that lot, I'm guessing the final UFA forwards list by July 1 is gonna pretty much be down to Necas, Tuch and Laine. The only way the Rangers let Panarin walk is if his play falls off a cliff this season, and LA has been budgeting for Kempe for awhile now. Schmaltz is smart enough not to think he's going to get over-paid on the open market and Lee is an Isles lifer.

Plus Kopitar and his cap dollars are off the books next year in LA so Kempe will get his large bag. Necas and the agent are already licking their chops for July 1st! Colorado probably has to find the best trade out there by the deadline to secure some solid assets back unless they want to just say screw it to losing him this playoff year and try and make a solid run with him in the lineup and then just let him walk.

Colorado probably won't be ballsy enough to move him at the deadline, or at least not if they feel like they're contending. And they probably will be. If nothing else, most teams aren't willing to go through all the derision Carolina weathered when they made the (correct) decision to bail on Rantanen.

And to think ... they could have just paid Rantanen what he's worth and not subjected themselves to the utterly predictable Necas drama.

Yeah, I was gonna note that and got distracted by Little Marty. It happens

So, McLeod and the other skaters are still too radioactive for and NHL deal. Nothing new on Hart. Vegas is still assumed to be signing him and could make room for a veteran minimum deal if they needed to.

Boy did Ned ever cough up a hairball at the end of regulation and in OT of the San Jose Vegas game last night.
Yeah, it was that slight hesitation to actually put his stick on the puck way out there on blue line, and when he did, it was a bit too late. I think what caused the hesitation was seeing that other Vegas player breaking out down the middle of the ice with no one on him. It looks like if had not hesitated to actually play the puck, he could have popped it out into the neutral zone.

As for the game tying goal from the red line: did the puck take a crazy bounce off the ice and break to his side like an unhittable spinner delivery in cricket?
