OK, so … where to start with Dylan Larkin? I like the guy, but one of the cornerstone problems with the Yzerplan is that he’s just not a No 1 center. Yet he is on that team, and like Robert Thomas is St Louis you’re going to run into the problem of playing 1C acquisition costs for a guy who’s really a 2C. And because half the league needs a 2C, I guess the market will bear what it bears. But there’s a reason that St Louis hasn’t gotten any real takers for Thomas after two solid years of leaving the guy in the shop window, and Larkin is just Thomas with more defense and less offense.
Honestly, he’d be an absolutely perfect fit on the Hurricanes as a 2C … where there is no real distinction between 1C and 2C in terms of 5v5 usage and they expect their centers to play responsible defense. When it comes to actual contenders, I honestly don’t see a better fit. He’s at an age where he needs to go to a ready made roster, otherwise he should just stick it out and hope the Wings keep creeping up on it. Now, if Detroit wants three quality assets like St Louis wants for Thomas, I’d probably tell them to pack sand. If they want a first and a prospect or a middle 6 NHLer and a prospect, then yeah. All day.
