2025-26 Premier League Thread

Leicester City won the Premier League 10 years ago. They reached the quarterfinal of the Champions League the following season. Won the FA Cup in 2021 and the Community Shield in 2022. They reached the Conference League semifinals in 2022. They were relegated to the Championship in 2023, bounced back in 2024 and were relegated again in 2025. Today, they were relegated for the 2nd year in a row, sent down to League One, where they haven’t played since 2008-09. Their standing in the table has been impacted by a 6 point deduction but they’d still be 1 point from safety without the deduction.

After 5 straight shutout losses in the League and losses in 6 of 7 in all competitions with another shutout thrown in for good measure, Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior. They’re 7th in the league, tied on points with Brentford and Bournemouth and 7 points out a Champions League spot.

Aww. What a shame …

Eventful few days in the Prem after the Chelsea loss led to Rosenior's sacking
W - Burnley 0-1 City, with City momentarily moving to the top of the table on goals scored.
Also, Bournemouth 2-2 Leeds, pushing Leeds nine points clear of the relegation scrap
F - Sunderland 0-5 Forest. Forest going 8 points clear for a moment.
Sa - Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle, going back top by 3 points, for now, though City have a match in hand.
And at the other end of the table: West Ham 2-1 Everton. West Ham remains 17th, two points clear of Spurs
Also, Wolves 0-1 Spurs. Spurs first win of 2026, keeping them two points behind West Ham in 18th.

Finally, Fulham 1-0 Aston Villa
And, Liverpool 3-1 Palace.
With the win, the Reds pass the Villans and go fourth on goal difference.

Exciting end of the season coming up.

The last matchday in the Champioship is Saturday. Coventry City are the champions. The battle below them is interesting. Ipswich are current oh 2nd. They can all but clinch the other automatic promotion with a win at 5th place Southampton tomorrow. That will put them 3 points head of 3rd place Millwall with an almost insurmountable goal differential. The Tractor Boys finish at home against mid-table QPR. If they falter, Millwall can pip them for 2nd. They host relegated Oxford United. If The Lions are promoted, it will be their first ever Premier League season. They last played in the First Division in 1989-90. Middlesbrough are 4th and can also jump into the 2nd spot with a win at 6th place Wrexham and losses or draws by Ipswich and Millwall. Southampton can either finish 4th or 5th and visit mid-table Preston on Saturday. Wrexham are still alive in their quest for a 4th consecutive promotion. They’re tied on points with Hull and are 1 goal better. They host Boro, Hull hosts 9th place Norwich. Should Wrexham and Hull both lose or draw, Derby County can move into the last playoff spot with a win against mid-table Sheffield United. At the foot, all 3 relegation spots have been filled. Oxford United are 22nd, Leicester 23rd and Sheffield Wednesday 24th. Leicester would still be fighting to stay up absent the 6 point deduction they absorbed. That would put them 22nd, 2 points behind West Brom, who absorbed a 2 point deduction. Sheffield Wednesday need a win agsinst West Brom to avoid finishing with negative points. They’re currently at -3 after taking a 18 point deduction. They’ve won 1 match in the league, September 20 at Portsmouth, and drawn 12. They advanced through 2 rounds of the EFL Cup with penalty shootouts against Bolton and Leeds before losing to Grimsby and lost their first FA Cup match to Brentford.

Leeds all but secured safety yesterday with a convincing 3-1 win over Burnley. But my favorite moment of the match happened right after the final whistle. The PA system started blasting out "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson; Burnley had sacked Scott Parker this week and replaced him with caretaker manager Michael Jackson. 🤣

As for today, Brentford put a serious dent in West Ham's survival dreams with a convincing 3-0 at the GTech. Newcastle hurt Brighton's European hopes with a 3-1 win at St James. And for now, Arsenal's 3-0 at home over Fulham puts them 6 points clear over City.

Today's early results
Bournemouth 3-0 Palace
Man U 3-2 Liverpool
Dreadful first half followed by brief hope inside 10 minutes after the restart (thanks to two comical errors by United), only to give it all back at the end. The chatter around Arne Slot at full time is getting increasingly louder though FSG don't seem interested in change. But given how uninspired and unimaginative they looked in the first half, you wonder why he can't be sent packing. 🤷
Fourth is there for the taking, my Villa friends. Seize it!

Every time I start to hate this team, I just remind myself of the absolute goon squad of a roster they had when they got relegated and I snap out of it :0)
Yeah, but there was a cause and effect there that made sense. I hated that team and they got relegated. I hate this team and it's competing for the Europa league and the champions league spots in the prem.

Important day for the title race and the relegation battle.

Relegation battle: Forest, saving most of their regulars for Thursday, put out a fringe team at Stamford Bridge today and still walked out 3-1 winners. Six points clear with 3 to play.

Title race: City took a 1-0 at the half on a great goal by Jeremy Doku. Then Everton scored the next 3, two by Barry, one that Marc Guehi played to him instead of his keeper.

Then City scored shortly after the kickoff to make it 3-2. And they leveled off another unbelievable strike by Jeremy Doku (with his other foot, no less) in the 7th minute of injury time.

But that leaves Arsenal 5 clear and their fate is again fully in their hands.

The weekend has a fair amount of drama in the title race, remaining European spots outside the first three, and the relegation fight.
1) Title race: easy 3-0 win on Saturday for City. Not so easy 1-0 win for Arsenal on Sunday. Controversy marred the end of the march as the typical corner rugby scrum ended with the referee being called over to rule on whether the tying goal scored by West Ham should be ruled out. It was, and Arsenal escaped. Five points ahead, with City's match in hand on Wednesday.
2) United drew 0-0 with Sunderland but are still comfortably third.
3) Liverpool drew on Saturday 1-1 with Chelsea, ending Chelsea's 6 match losing streak. But Villa failed to capitalize on Sunday, drawing 2-2 with Burnley. Liverpool remain 4th, Villa are 5th.
4) Bournemouth and Brighton are 6th and 7th respectively, both winning. Brentford's loss to City dropping to 8th behind Brighton. If Villa win Europa they automatically make the Champions League next year. And if they remain fifth then 6th in the Prem gets CL footie, too.
5) Relegation battle: West Ham loss kept them in the drop zone and guaranteed both Leeds and Forest in the Prem next season. Both teams secured draws to celebrate.
6) Finally, Spurs squandered a chance to move further clear of West Ham by drawing at home with Leeds. They are two points clear with two to play. Amazing save, though, by Spurs second choice keeper to help them maintain the draw.
The next two weeks will be insane. Can't wait
