2025 NHL UFA/Trade Thread

If you're the Leafs, who haven't won a game that matters in going on 58 years, with 34 and 16 in their prime and 91 on the cusp of being washed, you do that deal every day of the week and twice on a Sunday if you care about winning this year. Unlike the Habs, for them, the future is NOW. If you get Rants and win the Cup, no one will give a shit that it cost you Knies to get it. And if you don't get Rants and you get bounced in the first round again, nobody will give a shit that you kept Knies "for the future". It will simply be another year of failure.
you are slipping, you actually mentioned the Leafs winning a cup possibly,,,

You just don't trade your best young player that's already a key contributor for a rental. Sure if you win the Cup then it's a win, but if you don't win it's a major loss. I wouldn't take that gamble with a player like Knies being sacrificed. Plus they'll need Knies in the playoffs.

The Laffs waited too long to break up the core and make major decisions

The time to move was after the Habs playoff disaster in the covid gift years

Players had term and trade clauses were years away from kicking in

They could have completely changed the mix

If they want to change their mix, maybe they should consider a Rantanen-Marner swap.

Kypreous said the Leafs might not make a push for Rantannen if it cost them, say, a Matthew Knies. LOL

Typical Leaf fan, overrating his players. If managment thinks like that too, great. Are they trying to win a Cup or not? Sure Knies is a nice piece. And sure,Rantannen appears to be in a funk. But he has the potential of exploding at the right time and delivering this spring. Even if he then leaves the organization. Knies, not so much.
Look at Rantanen's numbers away from MacKinnon.

If he reups I could see it though. Tavares coming off the books.

I'll be wearing my new Huet jersey.
I'm not joking. Got this for $75 at a flea market. Pro cut jersey with pro stitching, reinforced stitching in the elbows, fight strap, the whole nine yards. Too good a deal to pass up.

I'll eventually get a Skrudland name bar to replace the Huet one.

Or maybe Demidov will take #39 to honor his idol Michkov.
