2026-27 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Tough spot for the Rangers to be in. That hot start doesn't necessarily mean they have turned the corner and are ready to be a playoffs factor again, so moving out assets for a #1A goalie is not ideal.

Hellebuyck isn't actually a great option because what happens when you get to NEXT season? Are you really going to trade away a whole bunch to get Hellebuyck and then be left figuring out what to do with one #1 goalie with 4 years at $8.25 million AAV left on his contract and your returning #1 goalie with 6 years at $11.6 million left on his deal? I suspect Hellebuyck wouldn't be all that interested in being a one year placeholder for the Rangers, knowing he is going to stay in NY.

Spencer Martin was recalled today, so there is the current replacement. They also have Joonas Korpisalo, but he is expected to be out at least another month due to injury.
I think a guy like Sam Montembault makes way more sense for the Rags over Helly…a capable nhl proven starter like Montembault playing with Korpisalo is fine for a fringe playoff bubble team like the Rangers.

Yeah, the info on Martin's injury was all over the place, same as you generally get in AHL markets. Seems like he wasn't all that hurt. The thing with just waiting for Korpisalo and then platooning is that Korpisalo sucks and fold under even the slightest pressure. And that D still loses track of game flow for big stretches even when they're playing well. I think the Rangers will make a play for an experienced guy if they can. I do not think it will be Hellebuyck because that contract is a non-starter for them and Drury is on thin enough ice as it is. If he makes that play then somebody's going to have to trust him to pick between Hellebuyck and Shesterkin at the end of the year and I don't think anybody trusts him with the Doordash lunch order right now.

I wonder if they don't reach out to Quick to see if he's up to get in shape for one more run. At least it wouldn't cost them any assets.

Avs Assistant Coach Dave Hakstol is reportedly leaving the team to take over as interim head coach at Arizona State. Their head coach has been placed on leave after a player collapsed during training.

... and what I'm reading is ASU needs to make sure all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed on the investigations before firing him (with cause) to get out from under having to pay him the rest of his contract... that's why he's now on leave and Hakstol will be "interim" coach for now.... loopholes in employment contracts.

Detroit didn't taper that contract at all. Only a million and a half discount for his age 35 season compared to his age 30 season. I know Debrincat kind of had them over a barrel, but sheesh.

I think the new CBA has new rules on the spread between contract years. So Detroit may have been a bit hamstrung.

BTW, as weird as some of the early results have been thanks to the compressed camps and pre season in the NHL, three weeks into proceedings you've got the Cup Finalists in 1st and 2nd overall. I expected the two teams with the shortest off seasons to be most likely to be hampered by the short runway to the season, but ... nah. Vegas and Carolina slipped right back into form. Meanwhile, several projected playoff contenders are stuck in some variety of muck. Philly is getting the headlines for their horrific start, but Montreal, Dallas and LA and are all off to bad starts of some kind and San Jose isn't hitting on much either. They were a popular pick in the Pacific. Small sample sizes and key injures play in, of course, but you CAN play your way out of contention this early and you can certainly turn your season into an uphill battle.

Elliotte Friedman says that Connor Hellebuyck’s suspension will end on Friday, October 23.

Our favorite UFC team set a record with their 3rd straight game with a natural hat trick. They dropped 8 on the hapless Kraken last night. I’d congratulate them if they weren’t the worst humans on the planet

I do wonder what they're going to do with him if he chooses to report. The Jets obviously don't want him around and their goalies have been just fine so far. I guess they could go all English Premiere League on Hellebuyck and make him work out on his own.

Well, they are all still professional hockey teams with real professional players. It's not like they were playing the Fire Department. Any team in this league can beat any other team on any night. Not sure why this is a thing lol
