2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

My sister’s office overlooks the river and the building has an outdoor patio. We went out on the patio on our first visit and Oh look, there’s Mount St. Helens. But over there is Mount Hood.
 
Canes VP of Communication Mike Sanheim was on with Ovies today. Lots of inside baseball, but Sundheim did say they’re closing in on a TV deal for next season and it should be announced some time in July.

I was wondering when they were going to address the elephant in the room for TV next season. Wonder if they partner with WRAZ, go straight streaming or make a deal with another carrier like ESPN who already has an NHL deal. I haven't read enough about the situation to even know what the options are.

It wouldn’t shock me if they signed with Scripps Sports. The Panthers, Lightning, Preds, Mammoth and Vegas all have deals with Scripps-affiliated TV stations in their market. In Raleigh, that would be WRPX, channel 47, based in Rocky Mount. Through ION Media, they also have stations in Charlotte, Greensboro, Greenville, Jacksonville and Wilmington. Scripps/ION has moved into sports nationally with contracts for the NWSL, PWHL and WNBA.

Have no idea what channel that would be for directv stream in this area. We dont have a WRPX channel 47
 
It's Spectrum Cable 23 for me, but unavailable (as many channels are) on the Spectrum app for my computers & tablets (& Samsung TV's not connected to cable) because I don't bundle the spectrum internet service. Unless they have an app that takes the Spectrum authentication (like many do), I might be stuck watching only in the family room on the cable-connected TV.

Yup. He’s not the only one reporting that and Frank usually gets stuff at least mostly right. It makes sense, but everybody seems to suspect that Hellebuyck is trying to decide whether or not he’s cool going somewhere other than Florida … who clearly can’t make up a package that satisfies Winnipeg. How much of that Florida preference is real and how much is imagined remains to be seen.

If this goes Carolina’s way, at least we’ll know today. Otherwise you’d be cobbling together a package of prospects to replace the 1st rounder.

Also, I’ve seen a lot of Hurricanes fans act like this would be a bad deal, not just because they don’t want to lose Nikishin but because they don’t see the value in Hellebuyck. I keep seeing stuff like, “they just proved you can win a Cup without a name brand goalie.” True, but the word “can” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Having a high end goalie makes it more likely that they can finish the deal again in this window. It just does.

If they’re nailing the deal down this early, you’d think it would be with somebody with a pre-existing structure like Scripps/ION. You’d think if they’re trying to do something more complicated like negotiate individual games with local/regional broadcasters it would take more time. It’s not like the front office has had a lot of bandwidth for non-hockey stuff until relatively recently.
 
YouTubeTV has something called “ION” but the listing does not specifically reference the call letters.

That’s because it’s a weird conglomeration of Scripps channels. I subscribe to the NC Courage games on ION and the ones that are broadcast on the channel just show up in my feed. The Canes games would work the same way.
 
Yea, I get ion, its just a bunch of syndicated shows reruns....like SWAT Magnum PI and then they have the WNBA too. I am sure they can find room for us there. :ROFLMAO:
