2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Yep, I saw a couple of mentions of the Cup drama on social media, the Canes, NC and Dundon are getting royally roasted. Especially by Vegas and Montreal fans who are apparently still butthurt.
 
Vegas would put carrot top and one of the hookers that sell themselves on the concourse on the cup

Montreal, well we don’t have to worry about them or Toronto having that problem. They haven’t won squat in a million years

OK, that makes sense. Montreal fans are permanently pissed off online* and Vegas just lost so they’re going to complain about any and every thing.

It’s weird to me that Montreal fans are saltier online than Toronto fans. Canes fans are their own brand of weird, before anybody accuses me of being out of touch with my own crowd, but Montreal fans online are … ummm … aggressively special.
 
If nothing else, Dom’s contract value model pegs Nikishin at $6.5 mil AAV which is apparently in line with what the Canes offered him before everybody got all huffy. While his market value is hovering just below $8 mil, it’s that contract projection line that serves as a decent target for a fair contract offer. There’s risk in both directions, after all. Also, 90% of fans who dismiss that valuation don’t understand what it means, which is yet another reason to avoid comments sections. In fact, Nikishin’s entire vibe is a really good reason to pass on comments sections this summer.

And yes, Shanyna does a really good job of evaluating the situation from enough distance to not be pushing an angle. Always helpful. Most troubling for me is the comps. It’s too small a sample size, but I do agree that disregarding his KHL numbers is smart because of the rapid decline of that league. If you’re just looking at his rookie year and his upside is somewhere along the lines of Noah Nanifin, then there’s more reason to trade him than just his agent being a prick and/or the player being dissatisfied with his usage as a rookie. If it’s more like Anton Babchuk, then there should be some real urgency to move him.

I do think that, for Canes fans, it’s REALLY wise to take a step back on this player and evaluate things logically. That’s not something Canes fans have been particularly good at, I’ll admit, but admitting that Nikishin might be a more valuable to the Canes as a trade asset than he is as a LD is a good place to start. Because depending on the return, it’s 100% true.
 
If Nikishin and his agent are going to go all Necas/Necas Dad and claim that he's the second coming and Isn't getting all the playing time and opportunities he so richly deserves, then it's definitely time to see what others are willing to give you for him. Call Florida, oh, they're capped out? HMmm. Tampa TOO, well, isn't that something? Maybe Dallas could...nevermind. Nashville is in a tax haven state. They might not suck next year. I'm really sorry that you just can't find a way to play for a team offering close to predicted market value on a consistent playoff (& occasional Stanley freakin' Cup Champion) team. Somebody's eitherngetting bad advice, has a hugely over-inflated ego, or some combination of the two. The agent is likely pushing for a big commission, so he doesn't have to "work" as hard to "get by".

Social media being so much more prevalent than it was even 20 years ago, it's going to be fun to see all of the Canes players with the Cup. This is just the first day of pics and videos. Great stuff!

I guess the Cup is back in Raleigh for a few days? I heard some high dollar STM were invited to see it today and tomorrow. As an “entry level fan” who sits in the 300s, I wasn’t invited.

I think it was just the corporate accounts and the few individuals with suites. Maybe they invited a few others, but that was what my rep hinted at when I talked to him a few weeks ago.
